Louis Saha remained defiant today over forcing Fulham to sell him to Manchester United.
The clubs have agreed a £12million fee and the striker was due in Manchester today for a medical and to finalise personal terms.
Negotiations with the 25-year-old's former club, Metz, over a sell-on fee also have to be concluded before the transfer goes through.
During weeks of bitter wrangling Saha criticised chairman Mohamed Fayed and warned the club he would leave for nothing at the end of his contract in two years if they did not sell him during the transfer window.
Saha says he stands by the way he acted and has no regrets: "Maybe I did not act like a loyal player but I had to stand up for what I wanted. This could be my only chance to join Manchester United and that is a dream for me. If it had been another club I would not have asked in the way I did.
"It has been very difficult and I know some peoples' opinions have not been on my side, I can understand that. But I have always wanted to play in the big competitions and even players in the lower league want to move on to the next level. To play for United is not just a dream for me and even people who don't know about football can understand it.
"It is a shame the way things went on, but I am very excited now about joining United. Nothing is done yet but everybody is crossing their fingers and hopefully this will be the end of the saga."
A significant factor is United finally meeting the £12m asking price, prompted no doubt by their lacklustre display in Saturday's defeat at Wolves.
