Premiership game details 19:21.01.02

last updated Monday 21st January 2002, 10:29 PM
Fulham visited Sunderland's Stadium of Light for the first time and came away ruing missed chances to take the full three points. As on previous occasions once the game was in progress Fulham appeared to be capable of so much more than first imagined but when called upon we were not able to take the opportunities to finish off the opposition.

After an early piece of brilliance that resulted in Steed Malbranque putting the Whites one up Sunderland appeared to be ready to collapse and more goals for Jean Tigana's squad seemed to be a matter of course. But both Steve Marlet and Bazza Hayles failed to convert good chances and the longer we struggled to get our second goal the more Sunderland got back into the game.

Edwin van der Sar proved his worth time and time again keeping the Black Cats out but with Fulham losing their attacking edge it was only a matter of time before Phillips got a goal. Once Sunderland were level it was a brave but desperate rearguard fight by Fulham to keep hold of the one point they still had. Even though Jean Tigana was disappointed that his squad did not make sure of the three points he would surely have been glad of the relief brought by the referees whistle for full time.

Despite the disappointment caused by missed chances it is now clear that Fulham are capable of knocking on the door of the top four or five places in the Premiership but at the moment our knock is a bit light.

COME ON YOU WHITES

Other games
Tottenham only managed a 1-1 draw at home to Everton so Super Spurs are just one point in front of us new boys having played a game more than Fulham. On Sunday West Ham collapsed 5-1 away at Fulham Broadway after keeping the halftime score at 1-0 while Leeds and Arsenal played out a 1-1 draw. On Monday Charlton failed to win at home to Aston Villa so we remain in 9th place.
