Milan Baros marked his Aston Villa debut with the only goal against Blackburn.

The Czech striker, signed earlier in the week from Liverpool, raced past Andy Todd on to Kevin Phillips' pass and gave Brad Friedel no chance after 10 minutes at Villa Park.

Fulham 1 Everton 0

Everton slipped to a 1-0 defeat by Fulham at Craven Cottage as Chris Coleman's men recorded their first league win of the season.

American striker Brian McBride - playing against one of his old clubs - latched on to a Moritz Volz ball from the right to sidefoot a shot beyond the reach of Nigel Martyn in the 57th minute.

David Moyes' side ended the match with 10 men as Phil Neville was sent off late on.

Manchester City 2 Portsmouth 1

Manchester City climbed above Spurs into second as they came from behind to beat Portsmouth 2-1 at Eastlands.

Pompey had been under pressure for most of the game but scored against the run of play as Colombian midfielder John Viafara glanced in a header in the 52nd minute from a Laurent Robert free-kick. City hit back 14 minutes later when visiting goalkeeper Sander Westerveld failed to gather a ball into the box and it fell kindly for midfielder Claudio Reyna.

Andy Cole scored the winner, netting his second goal for his new club with a smart turn and shot three minutes later.

Tottenham 0 Chelsea 2

Barclays Premiership leaders Chelsea maintained their two-point lead at the top with a 2-0 win against early high-flyers Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Saturday. The reigning champions forged ahead with six minutes to go to the interval thanks to a header from left-back Asier del Horno, his first goal for his new club after signing this summer from Athletic Bilbao.

Victory was assured for Jose Mourinho's side in the 71st minute when substitute Shaun Wright-Phillips' cutback found Damien Duff, and his mishit shot deceived Paul Robinson and found the net.

Spurs had been up against it after they were reduced to 10 men in the 25th minute. Egyptian striker Mido was the man to go, shown a straight red card by referee Rob Styles who adjudged he had used an arm in an aerial challenge on Del Horno.

West Brom 2 Birmingham 3

Birmingham earned their first win after a poor start to the season by beating midlands rivals West Brom 3-2 in an early kick-off at The Hawthorns.

Emile Heskey marked his return from injury to head the visitors in front in the 10th minute, but Geoff Horsfield then equalised against his old club two minutes later. Blues restored their lead when Jiri Jarosik headed in from Jermaine Pennant's free-kick (25) and Heskey gave them a two-goal cushion seven minutes later.

Birmingham tried to hold on to what they had in the second period, and Albion could only score once, through Horsfield, as Steve Bruce's side held on.

West Ham 1 Bolton 2

Bolton moved above West Ham thanks to a 2-1 win over the east Londoners at Upton Park.

Kevin Nolan prodded the ball in with 59 minutes on the clock after a cracking Jay-Jay Okocha shot was blocked on the line by Yossi Benayoun. The Hammers came close to an equaliser when a terrific shot from Teddy Sheringham hit the angle of post and bar.

Despite the home side's pressure it was Bolton who scored the decisive second as Okocha released Ivan Campo to score, before Sheringham pulled one back with a late penalty.

Wigan 1 Sunderland 0

Wigan won the battle of the bottom two 1-0 against Sunderland at the JJB Stadium. The goal came from a first-minute Jason Roberts penalty after he had been fouled in the box by Gary Breen.

Middlesbrough 0 Charlton 3

On Sunday, Danny Murphy inspired another magnificent away victory for Charlton as they kept their 100 percent record in tact with a 3-0 win at Middlesbrough.

The former Liverpool midfielder was in sparkling form again as Alan Curbishley's men sunk dismal Boro with an accomplished performance at the Riverside Stadium.

Murphy set up Dennis Rommedahl to fire a cool low drive past Boro keeper Mark Schwarzer and give his side a deserved 37th-minute advantage.

Then he effectively sealed the game with a precise 81st minute free-kick which found the unlikely figure of Chris Perry to sidefoot home the visitors' decisive second.

Darren Bent's fourth goal of the season deep into injury time simply added insult to injury for Boro boss Steve McClaren's beleaguered troops.

Newcastle 0 Man Utd 2

Later on Sunday Jean-Alain Boumsong endured a nightmare as Manchester United plunged Newcastle deeper into trouble with a 2-0 victory at St James' Park that maintained their faultless start to the new Premiership season.

The £8million signing gifted a 66th-minute opener to Wayne Rooney and then, as his side pushed for a last-ditch equaliser, allowed Ruud van Nistelrooy to seal the points in injury-time.

New signing Albert Luque had a 13th-minute strike correctly ruled out for offside and fired across goal at the end, but the Magpies have now collected just one point from a possible 12 and have not scored a league goal in 555 minutes of football.
