Saturday
On a day when Manchester United left it late to rescue a point at Aston Villa rivals Manchester City were frustrated by Birmingham at Eastlands and Tottenham beat Blackburn 4-2, while Liverpool lost to Stoke.

A thriller ensued at Molineux as Bolton saw off Wolves 3-2, Wigan edged a tight affair with West Brom, while West Ham and Blackpool and Newcastle and Fulham could not muster a goal between them.

Sunday
Chelsea squandered the chance to go five points clear at the top of the Premier League as Sunderland's 3-0 win saw them suffer their first home defeat since last March.

In Sunday's other match, goals from Bacary Sagna and Cesc Fabregas proved decisive as Arsenal held off an Everton fightback to move second with a 2-1 victory.

Aston Villa (0) 2 Man Utd (0) 2
An enthralling second half ensued in the Midlands after what was an insipid first period as Manchester United fought back from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw with Aston Villa.

A young Villa side repeatedly knocked at the door prior to Ashley Young's opener from the penalty spot with 18 minutes left as Gabriel Agbohlahor struck the base of the post and James Collins rattled the bar with a powerful header.

Wes Brown's awkward challenge from behind on Young gave the Villa winger a chance he gleefully dispatched from 12 yards before a fine break from the home side saw them double their advantage.

Young played in Stewart Downing down the left and his perfectly executed low cross was stabbed in from close range by Marc Albrighton.

There looked to be no way back for United but with under ten minutes left substitute Federico Macheda slammed a fine snapshot beyond Brad Friedel from just inside the box.

In the 85th minute it was left to skipper Nemanja Vidic to keep United's unbeaten record this season intact with a clever far post header from Nani's whipped in delivery.

Man City (0) 0 Birmingham (0) 0
Manchester City continue to struggle for goals as Roberto Mancini again endured criticism from the home crowd following a goalless draw with Birmingham.

A dull first half at Eastlands was punctuated by just one real talking point as Carlos Tevez saw a goal chalked off for handball; a decision that led to a booking as he took his protest too far.

It didn't get much better after the interval either as Mancini made the remarkable decision to substitute Tevez for Gareth Barry when chasing a winner with seven minutes left.

Newcastle (0) 0 Fulham (0) 0
England hopeful Andy Carroll found Mark Schwarzer in great form as the Australian keeper earned a point for Fulham in a goalless encounter at Newcastle.

Carroll, who is expected to be named in Fabio Capello's squad for next week's friendly against France, was denied by Schwarzer and his defenders on a frustrating afternoon for the Toon Army.

The Fulham keeper pulled off a string of fine stops including a point-blank stop to foil Peter Lovenkrands to earn a point for the visitors.

Carroll looked a constant threat to the visitors' rearguard but, without the suspended Joey Barton, the Magpies could not find a way past Mark Hughes' side who head back to London delighted with a point.

They could even have pinched all three but Moussa Dembele was unlucky to see a piledriver come back off the bar while Toon keeper Tim Krul also produced a couple of crucial stops.

Stoke (0) 2 Liverpool (0) 0
Liverpool's mini-revival came to an end in the day's late kick-off as they went down 2-0 to Stoke at the Britannia Stadium.

The Potters were the better team in a goalless first half before taking the lead early in the second period when Ricardo Fuller struck following a goalmouth scramble.

Roy Hodgson's side rarely looked like finding an equaliser and the result was put beyond doubt when Kenwyne Jones scored a breakaway goal in stoppage time.

There was still time before the final whistle for Liverpool's misery to be compounded as Lucas Leiva was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Tottenham (2) 4 Blackburn (0) 2
Tottenham got back to winning ways at White Hart Lane as they recorded a handsome 4-2 defeat of Blackburn.

Gareth Bale has now added headed goals to his armoury as his bulleted near post effort from Rafael van der Vaart's corner flashed past Paul Robinson.

Roman Pavlyuchenko was guilty of criminal profligacy as he fired over when clean through before shooting wide from the penalty spot after Jermaine Jenas was awarded the softest of spot-kicks after going down under a challenge from Christopher Samba.

The Russian was not to be denied though as Bale's darting run and cross presented him with the straightforward task of nodding in from close range.

Peter Crouch profited from some rank Rovers defending to put the game beyond doubt from close range after the break, leaving it to man of the moment Bale to grab Spurs' final goal with a scuffed finish from around eight yards.

Ryan Nelsen netted a consolation for Blackburn when David Dunn's drive deflected off him, before at the death a goalkeeping gaffe from Heurelho Gomes allowed Gael Givet's tepid shot to pass him.

West Ham (0) 0 Blackpool (0) 0
West Ham and Blackpool settled for a point apiece in a game of missed opportunities at Upton Park.

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway had threatened to quit if fined for making 10 alterations for the midweek defeat at Aston Villa, and elected to make 11 for this clash as he recalled his main men against the Hammers.

Referee Kevin Friend took centre stage when he denied the home side what looked two clear first-half penalties much to the disappointment of the home supporters.

Pablo Barrera thought he had been taken down in the box by Stephen Crainey before Craig Cathcart seemingly handled Victor Obinna's goal-bound effort.

Second half substitute Marlon Harewood, on his return to East London, thought he had given Pool the lead, but the striker's effort was ruled out by the referee's assistant for offside.

West Ham remain rooted to the bottom of the table after recording their third successive Premier League draw while the Seasiders remain just two points above the drop zone.

Wigan (0) 1 West Brom (0) 0
Victor Moses' first Premier League goal proved the difference as Wigan Athletic saw off West Bromwich Albion to climb out of the relegation zone.

The Latics wideman came off the bench to sink the Baggies in the second-half in a match that saw neither side create many clear-cut chances.

Wigan marginally edged the first half but it was West Brom who carved out the better opportunities with Peter Odemwingie going closest for the visitors.

But Roberto Martinez's half-time switch paid dividends as Moses latched superbly onto Charles N'Zogbia's pass before side-footing past a helpless Scott Carson.

The victory - their first in six and only their second at the DW Stadium - lifts the Latics out of the bottom three into 16th while Albion remain in 11th after their winless run was stretched to four games. .

Wolverhampton (0) 2 Bolton (1) 3
Molineux was the place to be in terms of goals as Owen Coyle's Bolton left the Midlands with a 3-2 victory in the bag.

Wolves experienced a nightmare start as Richard Stearman put past his own goalkeeper from close range when under pressure from Matthew Taylor.

It was a lead extended after the interval when Johan Elmander bamboozled Wolves' backline with some stunning footwork and a smart finish, before Stuart Holden made it three from Lee Chung-yong's cute pull-back.

Wolves' bid to earn an unlikely point saw Kevin Foley bend an effort beyond Jussi Jaaskelainen, before Steven Fletcher stooped low to expose some awful Bolton defending from a corner.

Everton (0) 1 Arsenal (1) 2
Arsenal survived an Everton fightback to win 2-1 at Goodison Park and move to second in the table.

Bacary Sagna scored a rare goal from a tight angle on 36 minutes after being teed up by Andrey Arshavin.

The Gunners then went two up when Cesc Fabregas slotted home three minutes after the restart following a one-two with Marouane Chamakh.

But Everton refused to give up and Lukasz Fabianski produced fine saves to deny substitute Jermaine Beckford, Steven Pienaar and Louis Saha.

The Toffees finally pulled one back via Tim Cahill on 89 minutes after a Saha knock down to set up a grandstand finish but Arsenal held on for a vital victory.

Chelsea (0) 0 Sunderland (1) 3
At the end of seven days in which cracks had started to emerge, Chelsea suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Sunderland in the Premier League to add to the problems at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues would have been desperate for positive headlines at the end of a week which contained a defeat at Liverpool, a scrappy and narrow win over neighbours Fulham and the unsavoury departure of former assistant manager Ray Wilkins.

But Nedum Onuoha gave Sunderland the lead in the late stages of the first half when his brilliant, quick feet exposed abject organisation at the heart of a Chelsea defence which was missing the injured John Terry and Alex.

And things were to get worse for Carlo Ancelotti's defending champions in the 52nd minute when Asamoah Gyan completed an excellent move that had again embarrassed a makeshift central rearguard of Paulo Ferreira and Branislav Ivanovic.

Chelsea fans were already heading for the exits as the final whistle approached and so missed the worst moment of their team's performance in the 87th minute when a hopeless Ashley Cole back-pass gifted Danny Welbeck a simple tap-in
