Premier League preview 16th-17th October 2010

last updated Saturday 16th October 2010, 9:39 AM
Apart from their own teams most football fans this weekend will want to follow the Everton v Liverpool Mersey derby particularly with all the off pitch goings on. Elsewhere, Arsenal aim to bounce back against Birmingham City, Fulham welcome Tottenham, newly-promoted West Bromwich Albion travel to Old Trafford, Aston Villa host league leaders Chelsea, while Blackpool welcome Manchester City to Bloomfield Road.

Saturday
Arsenal v Birmingham - 15.00
Arsenal head into their match against Birmingham City at Emirates Stadium having lost their previous two matches.

A shock home defeat to West Brom was followed by an all too familiar story at the hands of a Chelsea. A third slump on the spin is unthinkable for Arsene Wenger's team if they are serious about mounting a title challenge.

The Gunners could be boosted by the return of skipper Cesc Fabregas from injury. Blues boss Alex McLeish heard his side booed after they fell to a first home loss in 18 encounters against Everton. Despite such an excellent record at St Andrews, the club's overall form is of concern. Indeed, Birmingham have won only two of their last 17 league games.

Bolton v Stoke - 15.00
Stoke City seek to maintain their improved form when they make the trip to Bolton Wanderers.

After a sluggish start to the season, the Potters have managed an excellent return of 10 points from their last four games to propel them up to seventh in the standings. Bolton, however, have managed just one triumph all season, although, such has been their high volume of draws, the club have just lost one league game thus far.

Encouragingly for Owen Coyle, whose striker Kevin Davies made his England debut in midweek, history is on his team's side, with Stoke only winning one of the last eight league meetings versus Bolton.

Fulham v Tottenham - 15.00
Draw specialists Fulham are in action against London neighbours Tottenham Hotspur at Craven Cottage.

Mark Hughes has drawn 14 of his last 18 matches as a Premier League manager, with six of those stalemates coming in his seven league games in charge of Fulham this campaign. Nonetheless, the Cottagers join only United as unbeaten in the top flight to date, while the club lie 10th in the division.

Spurs are fifth after their victory over Villa last time out, and manager Harry Redknapp will be striving to ensure his players remain focused on the task in hand ahead of a mouth-watering Champions League tie at Inter Milan next week.

Man Utd v West Brom - 15.00
West Brom's start to the campaign has been hugely impressive with the club sixth in the table and just two points behind Saturday's opponents Manchester United, who have drawn over half of their seven games this campaign.

The Baggies have managed a fine return of eight points from their last four fixtures, and United will be on their guard after seeing Arsenal stunned at home by Roberto Di Matteo's men.

Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson must decide whether to recall striker Wayne Rooney, who continued to look out-of-sorts whilst on international duty with England during midweek. With Chelsea not playing until Saturday evening, the clash is a chance for United to apply some pressure on the pace-setters.

Newcastle v Wigan - 15.00
Just a point separates Newcastle United and Wigan Athletic as with the pair lock horns at St James' Park on Saturday.

The Magpies have suffered back-to-back losses despite putting in encouraging displays in both those matches.

Wigan climbed out of the bottom three after their triumph over Wolves, a result which means they have now lost only once in their last four matches - form which boss Roberto Martinez will take heart from following much inconsistency from his charges in the past. Interestingly, Wigan are also the only team in the Premier League yet to concede a goal away from home this season, yet they have only won one of their last 10 top flight away matches

Wolves v West Ham - 15.00
The last game on Saturday sees Wolverhampton Wanderers go head-to-head with West Ham United at Molineux.

Wolves' behaviour on the field has come under the microscope this season amid claims they are too physical. And Karl Henry's horrible challenge that saw him dismissed at Wigan did Wolves' reputation little favours. Indeed, Mick McCarthy's side have picked up the most cards this season: 20 yellows and two reds. Their form has been poor too, with no wins in their last six fixtures and losses in their previous four matches.

The Hammers are bottom of the table but five points garnered from three outings has helped lift the gloom that had been gathering under manager Avram Grant.

Aston Villa v Chelsea - 17.30
Chelsea's scalp of Arsenal saw them return to winning ways after their setback versus City.

The Blues look imposing at the summit as they sit four points clear with a, quite frankly ridiculous, goal difference of plus 21. Carlo Ancelotti takes his troops to Aston Villa before embarking on a lengthy trip to Spartak Moscow in the UEFA Champions League during midweek.

Gerard Houllier suffered his first defeat in charge of Villa last time out so the French coach will demand a response from this players versus the champions. And amongst Houllier's priorities will likely be to address Villa's susceptibility when going in front, with the side having dropped eight points this season from winning positions, the joint-most in the Premier League.

Sunday
Everton v Liverpool - 13.30
Liverpool looked set to be boosted ahead of their meeting with neighbours Everton after a High Court ruling seemed to seal the end of American owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks' time at the helm.

However, the pair, who have become hate figures in the eyes of some Reds fans, are still clinging to power as they battle to stop the sale of Liverpool. Quite what effect this latest twist will have on the team's performance on Sunday remains to be seen, but it is arguably a distraction manager Roy Hodgson, whose side are in the relegation zone, could do without.

For Everton, the club earned their first win of the season last time out while they are level on points with Liverpool, only escaping the bottom three on goal difference.

Blackpool v Man City - 16.00
Following the Merseyside derby on Sunday Blackpool's meet with Manchester City.

The Seasiders head into the match off the back of their terrific defeat of Liverpool at Anfield, which sees them a far from shabby position of ninth in the division. The two clubs' respective financial clouts are worlds apart, and City's spending appears to be gradually paying off with the club currently in second spot.

However, City have two points fewer after seven games this season than they had in 2009/10 under Hughes. City's fans' main gripe has been the lack of attacking ambition shown by manager Robert Mancini, with just nine goals mustered to date. Blackpool, to the delight of the neutral however, play with the shackles off under boss Ian Holloway. .
