Prematch Comment - Fulham v West Brom

Fulham enter Sunday's crunch Barclays Premiership showdown with West Brom in high spirits as 2005 continues to deal them a kind hand.

The club endured a wretched first half of the season after plummeting to the wrong end of the table but January has heralded the arrival of a dramatic change in fortunes.

On New Year's day they defeated fellow strugglers Crystal Palace, they took a point at Southampton and then survived a FA Cup scare at Watford last Saturday.

The news that Luis Boa Morte - a target for Newcastle during the transfer window - will remain at Craven Cottage for another three seasons will have been met with a broad grin from boss Chris Coleman.

And with Claus Jensen, Alain Goma and Tomasz Radzinski coming through a practice match earlier in the week, Coleman almost has a fully fit squad to select from.

Victory over bottom placed West Brom, a result which would see Fulham take a giant step towards Premiership survival, is next on the club's wish-list - but Coleman insists it will not be easy.

"We're capable of putting a good run together - we know that. If we win two or three on the bounce we're out of trouble. This is a crazy league at the moment," he said.

"West Brom is going to be a difficult game. They don't have anything to lose because they're at the bottom and have had a hard time of it. They will come to us with no fear, but it's a match we have to win.

"Our consistency can't get any worse than it has been in the first half of the season and we've still ended up with 22 points.

"I believe we can only get better, especially with players coming back in the next two to three weeks."

Midfielder Papa Bouba Diop and defender Zesh Rehman are in the reckoning for West Brom after Coleman rested them against Watford with both players one booking away from suspension.

West Brom BossBryan Robson believes the next month will "make or break" West Brom's hopes of surviving in the Premiership.

The Baggies have won only one of their opening 22 league matches and are five points adrift of the safety zone.

But they now face four of the five sides immediately above them in the table during the forthcoming four week period - starting with Sunday's televised clash at Fulham.

New signing Kevin Campbell, snapped up on a free transfer from Everton, is expected to make his debut at Craven Cottage.

Albion then have to face Crystal Palace, Norwich and Southampton in quick succession and their confidence has been lifted by a four-game unbeaten run.

Robson saw the side secure their first win since he replaced Gary Megson in early November in last Saturday's FA Cup tie at Preston.

He said: "It was great to get a win at Preston in the FA Cup but not just because of the win. We've now gone four games unbeaten which is good for the confidence of the lads.

"It also sets us up nicely for the really important month we've got coming up. It's make or break. There is no getting away from that.

"What we do against the teams around us will structure our season. If we get good results against them we'll bring them back into the relegation zone with us.

"It's a matter of us doing our job. The lads do believe they can turn it around and the thing for me now is to make sure I bring in a few new faces to boost the lads as well."

Campbell faced a similar scenario when he joined Everton just before the transfer deadline in March 1999 and scored the goals which kept them in the top flight.

Now he is on a similar mission and confident that he can succeed. He said: "I think there is a good squad here and, with a few additions, I think we could really jump up the table.

"I really believe that. I wouldn't have joined if I didn't think that was the case. I think the players in the team can do better and will do better. They've started to turn their form around in recent weeks."
