Fulham's Cameroon international Pierre Wome has been granted a work permit - but is not fit enough to make his debut at Middlesbrough tomorrow.

The 23-year-old defender caught Jean Tigana's eye at the World Cup and was snapped up on a 12-month loan deal from Bologna.

However, boss Tigana does not feel Wome is match fit, so he will miss out at the Riverside Stadium.

Fellow new signing Martin Djetou - out for another three weeks after a minor knee operation - returned to England from France yesterday and will soon step up his recovery programme.

Barry Hayles, last season's top scorer, will serve the final match of his three-game suspension held over from last term.

Long-term Achilles casualty Lee Clark skippered Fulham's reserve side in Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Wimbledon. However, he is not yet ready for a first-team return.

Middlesbrough will be without Slovakian international forward Szilard Nemeth.

Nemeth suffered a hamstring injury on international duty against the Czech Republic on Wednesday.

Manager Steve McClaren has yet to decide who will take over as left-back from the suspended Frank Queudrue. Veteran Colin Cooper is the favourite.

And McClaren is backing record club buy Massimo Maccarone to be a force in English football.

The £8.1million signing from Italian club Empoli will make his home debut against Fulham.

McClaren said: "Maccarone has tremendous ability. His link-up with players has been very good and he will make his mark in the Premier League."

The Boro boss added: "Maccarone had a hard time in the first half with Southampton but he showed his ability in the second. We have to be patient with him but, who knows, he might explode and score two goals against Fulham."

Maccarone could be partnered up front by the experienced Alen Boksic.

Boksic has been linked with Real Madrid but McClaren has dismissed speculation over the player.

And midfielder Phil Stamp is having talks with Hearts over a move.

First team prospects at Boro are limited for a player who has come through the ranks and McClaren said: "I cannot guarantee Stamp a first team place. He is frustrated over this and an opportunity has come along that could help his career."
