Match Stats - Fulham v Portsmouth 01.05.04

last updated Thursday 29th April 2004, 2:43 PM
Fulham travel to the South Coast on Saturday to play relegation escapees Portsmouth and will be looking for three points to support their European ambitions. Pompey have only lost one and drawn one in their last eight home games so will not go quietly.
  • In the final third Fulham have been well in front of Portsmouth for goals scored but in the past 6 games Pompey have improved dramatically scoring 10 in relation to Fulham's 7. In the process Pompey have won five and drawn one game while Fulham have won two, drawn three and lost one. The Cottagers have continued to be the busier of the two squads in front of goal making some 25% more shoots than Pompey in recent games. However Pompey have started to convert more chance into goals and in the last 6 games are the most accurate squad in the Premiership. So Pompey will be a handful for the defence of the visiting Londoners.
  • In the middle of the park Pompey are not one of the top squads for sending in crosses but even they have sent in over 100 more crosses than Fulham since the start of the season. However in recent games the position has been reversed with Fulham sending in over 20% more crosses per game than Pompey. On the passing front Portsmouth were neck and neck with Fulham up to recently but at the same time they have started to win games their passing rate has markedly decreased.
  • Pompey have conceded just four more goals than The Cottagers so far this season and in recent games they are conceding goals at the same rate as The Cottagers. However when we look at the clean sheet stats we see a major difference between the two squads as Fulham have achieved 14 clean sheets in comparison to the 8 achieved by Pompey. Fulham obtained 5 of their clean sheets in their last 6 games, 3 of them on their travels.
Fulham is still the top tackling team in the Premiership but Portsmouth have had an above average interest in tackling but nowhere near the chart topping performance of Fulham. The Cottagers tackling rate had declined in recent time but in the last 6 games it is back to a Premiership topping rate. Pompey on the other hand has sunk to the bottom of the Premiership tackling chart in recent games.
  • It seems that Pompey have changed from sinners into saints on the fouling stats. From producing 9% more fouls than the Fulham lads in the last six games Portsmouth are producing an incredible 47% less fouls than Fulham.
Boss Coleman will be happy that the defence is working again following back to back clean sheets as Pompey have been the Premiership hotshots in recent games. Historically Fulham have drawn 4 times in their last 6 visits to Fratton Park seems like history may repeat itself.
