England boss Roy Hodgson faces an astonishing £1million tug-of-war with his old club Fulham over coach Ray Lewington.

Former Fulham boss Hodgson wants highly-respected Lewington to stay on as his right-hand man permanently after Euro 2012.

But Fulham have slapped a whopping seven- figure 'transfer fee' on their academy director to try to keep him at Craven Cottage.

A Fulham insider said: "At the moment, Ray's allowed to go to Euro 2012 with Roy.

"But after that we want him back. He's under contract and only compensation of around £1m would be enough to let him go."

Hodgson and Lewington took Premier League minnows Fulham to the Europa League final in 2010, earning the club around £5m.

Lewington, 55, has managed the first team and coached at almost every level at the Cottage and is known as Mr Fulham.

After Hodgson left to join Liverpool two years ago, Lewington was relegated to a backseat role under Mark Hughes.

Under current manager Martin Jol, he reverted to a hands-on role coaching the kids and is keen to team up with Hodgson again at the European Championships.

The England squad meets up today for the first time under Hodgson ahead of Saturday's friendly in Norway.
