Fulham v Hadjuk Split - Match Preview

last updated Thursday 03rd October 2002, 3:50 PM
Fulham Manager Jean Tigana has demanded his players do not blow their UEFA Cup chances by rising to the bait against Hajduk Split tonight.

The Croats played dirty in the first leg in their homeland a fortnight ago, which the Cottagers won 1-0.

Split's players threw themselves to the ground at every opportunity and left Fulham striker Barry Hayles bruised and battered after a very physical contest.

Tigana, asked is he expecting more of the same at Loftus Road tonight, said: "Yes, because that's this team's culture. I've seen five tapes and that has always been their attitude. "We must keep calm and play football, because we'll have big problems if we fight them. "I've told my players to be careful - and I'll tell them again this morning."

At half-time in the first leg in the intimidating Poljud Stadium, Tigana ordered Hayles - a notorious hot-head - not to react to his treatment. "I want to protect Barry tonight," Tigana added. "He'll play and I hope he keeps his head. "But with Barry, you don't know because sometimes he likes a fight as well. He's a typically physical player."

Fulham's preparations for tonight's showdown were disrupted last night by the news of Chris Coleman's retirement due to injury. The 32-year-old club captain, a driving force behind their elevation through the Football League, finally admitted defeat in his gruelling 21-month fitness battle - and started a broad coaching role with the Cottagers yesterday.

Fulham boss Jean Tigana said: "It was too difficult for Chris to play again and I've explained to him that my door is open if he wants to work with me. "He can start with the under-15s and under-17s and with me. He's a good man and has the possibility to manage at a high level, so it's a good opportunity for him and for Fulham. "I knew he wouldn't be able to play again, but I preferred that he made that decision. "Chris has the human possibility to manage at a high level, because he is a leader. Now he has to work on it. "He started working with me yesterday, because my physical trainer Roger Propos and assistant Christian Damiano also work with the first team and the young players."

The Cottagers also have to cope with the absence of Alain Goma Steve Finnan and Louis Saha through injury.

Former Croatia international Igor Stimac is confident Hajduk Split can overturn their 1-0 deficit against UEFA Cup opponents Fulham.

Hajduk wasted a series of first half chances against Jean Tigana's Premiership side in the first round, first leg match in Croatia two weeks ago and now take on the Englishmen again at Loftus Road.

Steed Malbranque scored the only goal of the game in the first leg but former Derby County and West Ham defender Stimac, now an executive director at Hajduk, believes the Croats are still in with a chance.

"I've got a good feeling about the match. We suffered big misfortune in the first leg as Fulham scored from their first shot," he said. "And we saw that Fulham is not a team that we can not beat. "We need to play good passing football though. It is obvious that the Fulham players are not in good shape lately judging by their Premiership matches."

Fulham go into the match on the back of a 2-0 defeat to Everton over the weekend while Hajduk are buoyed by a 1-0 win over Zadarkomerc in the Croatian league.
