Fulham are eyeing up a January swoop for Newcastle right-back Danny Simpson.

Sources close to the Craven Cottage club have indicated that Simpson is on Martin Jol's wishlist, and the Chronicle understands that the Londoners are monitoring the right-back's progress.

Simpson is keen to stay at Newcastle, but is yet to sign a new contract, despite talk of a four-and-a-half year deal.

The defender has 18 months of his current agreement to run, with discussions failing to extend his stay.

It was then Fulham boss Mark Hughes who first sparked the Cottagers' interest in Simpson, and he may well turn his attentions back to Simpson if he lands the job at QPR, with Aston Villa also believed to be keen on the full-back.

Simpson has maintained his place in the starting line-up throughout discussions with the club and, unlike Joey Barton, the player has managed to keep a good relationship with Magpies officials during a saga that has dragged on since last summer.

Simpson picked up a shoulder knock in the 2-1 win over Blackburn on Saturday, but is hoping to be fine for the clash with QPR this Sunday.

United boss Alan Pardew has always insisted he would like to keep Simpson.

However, he described the possible departure of the players as simply "business" at the end of last year.
