SHAUN MALONEY failed to negotiate a new deal with Celtic yesterday.

But the SPL champs insist the continued stalemate does NOT mean Maloney's Parkhead career is all but over.

Maloney's representative John Halliwell jetted across the border for the crunch showdown with Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell.

It had been hoped that the pair would be able to thrash out a contract extension which would tie the Scotland international to the club. But Halliwell was travelling south again by tea-time with no new deal and with his client's future still hanging in the balance.

It's understood Premiership club Fulham are at the front of the queue for Maloney's signature should the 24-year-old, who will be available on a Bosman in the summer, decide to sever his ties with Celtic after eight years.

Maloney is also keen on the idea of testing himself in England's top flight but Lawwell and manager Gordon Strachan are determined to keep the player in Paradise.

A source close to yesterday's discussions said last night: "There was a meeting in Glasgow between Peter Lawwell and Shaun's representative. The discussions were amicable and the situation is on-going."

Malaysian-born Shaun Maloney is a product of the Celtic youth system and made his debut for the Hoops in the Old Firm derby in April 2001, shortly after joining the club.

He sustained cruciate knee ligament damage in February 2004 which ruled him out of action until the following February but since then Maloney has been a fixture for the whole of 2005/6, making 44 appearances and scoring 16 goals. He also made history by becoming the first player in Scotland to win both the Player of the Year and Young Player of the year awards.

Maloney also made his debut for Scotland in their 1-0 defeat against Belarus, and could well be a fixture for the national team for years to come.

Deployed as either an attacking midfielder or striker, he has incredible stamina and a great eye for goal.
