Fulham target Sean Doherty

EVERTON are facing a losing battle to keep England youth winger Sean Doherty - and Fulham are ready to pounce.

Dazzling Doherty, just 16, can quit Goodison when his current deal ends and he may walk out on the Merseyside giants.

Doherty was leading scorer for England's Under-15s last season and was outstanding against Italy at Under-17 level last week.

But now Jean Tigana's Fulham want to snap up the youngster on pro forms and are willing to pay a big compensation fee for him.

Doherty has met Fulham bosses and they have made an offer of around pounds 300,000 which has been rejected.

Everton may look for as much as pounds 1m in instalments and a special FA tribunal looks set to decide his value shortly.

The situation has caused a few red faces around Goodison Park. None more than youth recruitment officer Mick Doherty... he's Sean's dad!

It's also a major blow for Everton. Doherty is rated the best kid to have come through their ranks since Francis Jeffers.

Ironically, in the same summer, both could be heading out of Goodison for London and a fresh start.
