The 28-year-old cost £10.5million when Roy Hodgson signed him from Everton last summer.

But he has only scored 10 goals for the club so far - with three of those coming against lower league opposition in the FA Cup.

Yet the former Crystal Palace striker says he is happy to take a back seat if the club are successful and admits he hasn't given up hope of adding to his eight England caps.

"This season the goals haven't come probably as freely as I would have hoped, but I'm happy with my total so far and I'd like to add another four or five," said Johnson, whose side are ninth in the Premier League.

"With the amount of money the club spent on me, there was always going to be pressure to do well and score goals but, for me, the main thing was the team's performance.

"That's the important thing, not how many times I hit the back of the net."

He added: "As far as the England team is concerned, it's at the back of my mind, but at the same time it's not something I think about every day.

"Playing for your country is a massive honour, but the main thing for me is playing and performing for Fulham.

"But if I'm playing well and scoring goals, you never know do you?"
