Derby County have confirmed that an unnamed Premier League club, believed to be Fulham, have succeeded with a loan offer for Giles Barnes and could seal a permanent move at the end of the season for around £2m.

The talented midfielder has played only five games for The Rams this season due to fitness problems but caught the eye with two strikes against Manchester United in the Carling Cup on January 20.

That performance, and the promise he showed intermittently in The Premier League last season, has seemingly convinced Roy Hodgson to make a move as he seeks to replace Jimmy Bullard in the Fulham midfield.

Rams boss Nigel Clough has confirmed that Barnes is poised to leave Pride Park in search of top flight football.

“Giles has made it clear he wants to play in The Premier League again and this is a great opportunity for him to do that,” Clough told the club’s official website.

“It’s something that came up yesterday (Thursday) and I am comfortable to give the player the chance to speak to them.

“To be honest it is a very good deal for all parties involved and I wouldn’t have agreed to it if I didn’t believe it was in the best interests of Derby County.

“Giles is a terrific lad with a big future ahead of him and we all wish him well if the deal goes ahead.”
