Fulham join the No's for Intertoto

last updated Tuesday 04th March 2003, 8:58 PM
Fulham have announced that they will not be taking part in the competition, despite winning their way through into the Uefa Cup this season for the first time in their history.

The Cottagers won the Intertoto Cup last year as part of a 14-game European run which saw them reach the fourth round of the UEFA Cup.

Ahead of the deadline for registering their interest with the Football Association, a Fulham spokesman said: `We have not applied for the Intertoto Cup.'

The club are reluctant to reveal the principal reason behind their decision, but the spokesman confirmed the number of games played this season was a factor.

Last weekend's clash with Sunderland was the team's 49th match of their season, which started with an Intertoto fixture on July 6, just six days after the World Cup final.

Tigana and his players have blamed the summer tournament and a small squad for tiredness and injuries as the season has developed.

Leeds Utd has also now decided against entering the Yorkshiremen into next summer's InterToto Cup.

The Premiership side had earlier indicated that they would be keen to participate in the competition, which offers a back-door route into Europe.

Aston Villa have also revealed they will not be involved.

It is believed that Newcastle United may be the only English team to ask to be considered for inclusion in the much-maligned tournament, which cuts short players' holidays and breaks.
