Fulham throw Notts County a financial lifeline after the Cottagers paid the Magpies for Steve Finnan's sell-on clause.

The Premiership outfit have paid the Meadow Lane club, who are currently in administration, £250,000 to buy out the clause that would have been worth 15% of any future transfer fee.

The money will go some way to ensuring the future of the struggling Second Division side who have been in administration since June 2002.

Earlier in the season Finnan was linked with an £8m move to Manchester United, a deal which would have landed Notts £1.2m.

But with the transfer market seemingly in free-fall, the club have decided to take the money offered now, according to the Nottingham Evening Post newspaper.

Finnan made 91 appearances for County and had established himself as an Ireland international before signing for Fulham in November 1999 for £600,000.
