Fulham manager Martin Jol indicated talks to extend Pavel Pogrebnyak's stay in west London are under way after watching the Russian forward fire a hat-trick.

The 28-year-old has now netted five goals in three appearances, which has left manager Jol understandably delighted.

''In January you will never get the £10million player because nobody will sell them,'' the Dutchman said. ''They will keep their best players and I was aware of the situation. The last match he played for Stuttgart they lost so I thought maybe the timing was good to try and get him.

''Years ago I went over to try and get him in Germany (while at Hamburg), but he made the decision to go to Stuttgart. We can't say that he had the best of times there, but there are four or five strikers there.

''If you score it is fine, if you don't score you're out the next game. That is probably a different feeling for him. He knows he will play for us and we promised him he will get his games. He is a very good lad. The first training session he gave us a feeling that he wanted to be here, that he wanted to prove a point.

''That is always good so I can't say what I did after his first game, where I said 'one swallow doesn't make a summer'. After five goals in the three games, I have to say he is a pretty good signing for us.''

Pogrebnyak's loan deal runs until the end of the season, when he will also be out of contract at parent club Stuttgart. Jol has previously dismissed suggestions he is already in talks over an extended deal, but today's performance seemed to make him change tack.

''We're talking to four or five players about new deals,'' he said. ''You want to keep your best players and I think he is certainly one of them. I never worry about these things. I am only happy that we made the right decision to sign him because you never know.

''There are so many strikers on the market and you have to get them when they are not at their peak. We certainly got him when he wasn't on his peak, but he is now so I am happy with that.''

The result propelled Fulham to eighth in the table, but Wolves dip into the relegation zone on goal difference.
