"Geography has made us neighbours. History has made us friends. Economics has made us partners, and necessity has made us allies. Those whom God has so joined together, let no man put asunder". Hands up how many of you QPR and Fulham fans will be sharing John F Kennedy's kindly thoughts on the next-door neighbours! Very few!
The caring, sharing days when Rangers welcomed their west London rivals as tenants at Loftus Road are long gone. Between 2002 and 2004, Fulham owed QPR a debt of gratitude for letting them ground share during the redevelopment of Craven Cottage. There are few amicable feelings now.
Fulham supporters are likely to make their feelings known when they see Mark Hughes, who resigned after 11 months as manager of the Cottagers to "move on and further my experiences".
Chairman Mohamed Al Fayed's retort that Hughes had been a "flop" won't be forgotten by the Welshman, who has only lost one of seven meetings against clubs that he has previously managed.
Hughes badly needs a win. His new club has won once in 13 league games and, with five of the top six to play in their final eight games, Fulham must target at least seven points from their next four matches against QPR, Everton, Bolton and Sunderland.
Bobby Zamora, who faces his old side for the first time, and the other new signings have to hit the ground running. Martin Jol will publicly grieve for the loss of the player, but privately will welcome an end to stories of rifts. Russian new boy Pavel Pogrebnyak scored on his debut to ease discontent over Zamora's defection and, though their away form is traditionally dire, Fulham's run of just three league defeats in 10 games is steady.
It will be tight, tense and agitated. One thing is for sure; Sparky will be on fire and won't accept anything less than a home win. Relegation won't be on his agenda.
