Schalke have given former Fulham defender Moritz Volz the chance to resurrect his career and earn a return to his first professional club.
The 26-year-old left the Royal Blues to join the Gunners in 1999 and spent further spells with Wimbledon, Fulham and Ipswich, but he has been without a club since July.
Schalke manager Felix Magath now wants to take a close look at the full-back, who was part of the 26-man squad that flew to Jerez this morning for a one-week training camp ahead of the Bundesliga restart on January 15.
With the future of Schalke's current first-choice right full-back Rafinha unclear after he reported for training late, Volz has the chance to not only earn a contract but also stake a claim for a place in the Royal Blues' team.
Volz earned one call-up to the Germany squad in 2004 but has yet to win an international cap.
He played 146 times for Fulham before being released last summer.
