The Time Is Now

Durkin in the middle for Boro

last updated Tuesday 06th January 2004, 4:53 PM
P A Durkin - Portland, Dorset
Referee Paul DurkinPaul Durkin is the grand old man of the Premiership, even though, at 45, he's not technically that old. The Dorset born ref has now turned professional, but previously listed his occupation as 'administrator'.

Durkin has been a Premier League referee since its inception back in 1992, and is one of the most respected amongst managers and players. As you'd expect from one of the veterans, Durkin has been refereeing for some time - starting his career back in 1974 and progressing to the Football League in 1987.

Referee Stats - 2003/2004
On the surface Ref Durkin's figures seem rather good in that they are less harsh than many of his Premiership collegues. He whistles less than average and gives out less cards than average.

However the devil is in the detail as highlighted below when we look at how he spreads his cards between home and away squads.

It would appear that Ref Durkin does not spend much time reviewing his past performances if his yellow card stats are anything to go by. He awards fouls fairly even handedly but then goes on to give 77% of his yellow cards to the away side.

Hopefully Mr Durkin treats visiting Fulham players more fairly, at Middlesbrough, than his record might indicate.
