Veteran Olympique Marseille defender Patrick Blondeau is leaving the first division team and may join English premier league newcomers Fulham, sources at the French club said on Monday.

Blondeau, who played under Fulham manager Jean Tigana at Monaco, returned to his native Marseille last season after a spell with Girondins Bordeaux.

Blondeau is a full-back whose bark is almost as bad as his bitel.

In the Stuart Pearce mould of defenders, Blondeau took over the Marseille captaincy in 1999-2000 when Robert Pires decided he wasn't up to it.

He quit the OM captaincy in November 2000 and three months later launched a savage attack on the way the club was being run. Said the dressing-room was unhappy and disunited while the squad was too large.

The 33-year-old was a French champion in 1997, he moved to Sheffield Wednesday but hated life in Northern England and quickly got out, spending six months with Bordeaux before following coach Courbis to Marseille.
