Barber in the middle for Arsenal

last updated Thursday 27th November 2003, 10:35 AM
Graham Barber - Tring, Hertfordshire.

Personal background

Ref Graham BarberGraham Barber has survived on the Premiership list since 1996, gaining promotion just two years after making it on to the Football League rota in 1994. The 44-year-old is a sales consultant by trade and lives in the great commuter belt known as Surrey.

He began his career in the London area, taking charge of matches in Kingston before climbing the ladder to the FIFA referee's list in 1998. Barber was short listed for Euro 2000, but just missed out on the cut after refereeing two of the competitions qualifiers. His highest profile match in English football was as linesman, sorry, referee's assistant during the 1994 FA Cup final. Barber has officiated in World Cup qualifiers and various international, not to mention some Champions League and Uefa Cup matches. He is an extremely experienced referee, with European pedigree.

He was top of the discipline list during 2001/02, dishing out 78 yellow cards in his 22 matches but in 2002/2003 he calmed down and was fairly average in comparison to the other Refs.

He will need to be careful on Sunday, following his controversial penalty decision for Charlton last week, as Arsenal, so far this season, have managed to get 3 penalties at home, more than any other team in the Premiership.

Fulham related comments
Ref Barber has not officiated at a Fulham game so far this season but "looked after us" on 2 occasions last season. His main claim to fame was sending Maik Taylor off against Tottenham last season.

Davies was sent clear by Anderton and as he attempted to round MaikTaylor the keeper pushed the ball away before the Spurs winger went down over Taylor's still outstretched arm. Unfortunately for Fulham, Barber was trailing behind the action and without consulting his assistant the ref, wrongly, immediately sent Maik Taylor off.

Ref Barber gave a yellow to Bazza for his attempt to rearrange Mr. Foxe's facial contours following his foul on Barry. After the Everton melee the F.A. decided to let Barry off for stamping on an Everton player but gave him a 3 match suspension for the incident with Mr. Fox.
