COVENTRY City are monitoring Geoff Horsfield's situation at Bramall Lane.

The Sheffield United striker recently called a truce with manager Neil Warnock after a difference of opinion about his lack of first-team opportunities.

Horsfield has played just three times for United since his move from West Bromwich Albion in February which saw thePremiership new boys agree to pay £1.2 million for his services.

But, despite being told he will start the new season with a clean slate, the 32-year-old's long-term future is still believed to lie away from South Yorkshire.

Several Football League clubs are known to have explored the possibility of offering Horsfield an escape route, but Coventry are the first to break cover.

Should an official approach materialise, United are unlikely to turn down the chance to cut their losses on a player who, with at least five teammates ahead of him in the pecking order, is in danger of becoming a very expensive luxury.

Micky Adams, Warnock's opposite number at the Ricoh Arena, has been an aggressive operator in the transfer market this summer as he attempts to follow United into the Premiership, and, whatever his difficulties at present, Horsfield still has plenty of admirers in the Football League.

However Leeds, who have been strongly linked with the former Birmingham City and Fulham marksman ever since Warnock confirmed his interest in Rob Hulse, are unlikely to join the chase, preferring to pursue other possible targets including Luton's Steve Howard.
