Fulham were defeated by West Ham at the Cottage on Wednesday evening.
Crysencio Summerville’s goal proved the difference on an evening where there wasn’t much between the two sides.
The bulk of the action occured in the second half, where Fulham had a penalty overturned by VAR, with Tom Cairney eventually adjudged to have fouled a West Ham player rather than the other way around.
That allowed Summerville to capitalise on a defensive mix up moments later to inflict defeat upon Marco Silva’s side.
With this our second of three Cottage fixtures in the space of a week, Marco Silva rang the changes.
Harry Wilson’s absence was enforced, missing out with an ankle injury, but Ryan Sessegnon, Oscar Bobb and Emile Smith Rowe were among those rotated. Antonee Robinson, Cairney, Josh King and Samuel Chukwueze came in.
There were just 30 seconds on the clock when Bernd Leno was forced into his first save of the evening, beating away Taty Castellanos’ first time effort.
Early chances were exchanged as Chukwueze played a smart one-two with King on the edge of the box, but there wasn’t enough power on his shot to trouble Mads Hermansen.
It was the players returning to the side who were combining well early on. Robinson’s low cross found King in the box, but the ball was bouncing and difficult to control as it arrived on his left foot, with the youngster skewing a shot wide.
But West Ham’s attacking players were combining nicely too. A smart lay off from Castellanos sat up beautifully for Jarrod Bowen on the edge of the box, with Sunday’s star player Issa Diop well placed to deflect the shot wide.
Alex Iwobi, who described his side-footed goal against Spurs as ‘unique’, nearly scored another special strike. From a similar position, he chose to shoot with the outside of his right boot this time, but it was straight into Hermansen’s grasp.
King was a livewire in this first half performance – and he almost scored his first Premier League goal with a moment of genius. On the stroke of half-time, he got away from his man with a special first touch, before taking a crisp shot while on the swivel, but it was saved by Hermansen’s right leg.
The Hammers started the second period in a similar manner to how they started the first. 45 seconds were on the clock when Leno got fingertips to Tomáš Soucek’s towering header.
Just a few minutes later, Fulham thought they’d won a penalty when Cairney appeared to be fouled in the box by Castellanos, but after a VAR review, it was adjudged that the skipper had actually kicked the Argentine forward’s leg as he went to shoot, with a free kick given the other way.
As West Ham broke forwards through Castellanos, an excellent recovery run from Chukwueze saw him intercept a pass that was heading towards Summerville, with Leno down low to prevent what would have been an unfortunate own goal.
A big mix up at the back led to West Ham’s goal. Leno came out of his area to intercept a long ball forwards, but there was some miscommunication between the goalkeeper and Calvin Bassey, allowing Summerville to pounce and strike into an unguarded net.
Before the goal, Bobb, Smith Rowe and Rodrigo Muniz had been introduced to the action, and Muniz almost brought us back on level terms when meeting Kenny Tete’s cross, but his header fell wide.
Substitute Timothy Castagne was the next to have a headed attempt go wide, even though he met Bobb’s corner with real conviction.
Castagne's best chance was still yet to come. He caught a clearance sweetly on the volley, but Hermansen sprung to his left to parry the shot away from danger and to secure the three points for the visitors.
Fulham boss Marco Silva:
you give a foul on King in that moment, 100 per cent sure by the rules it's a yellow card. If you give that free-kick for us, the game is going to be completely different [because Fernandes is sent off].
"The game was not the most beautiful game. The performance from the referee was not at the level."
On the overturned penalty: "[VAR] John Brooks saw it in a completely different way to the referee. It's difficult to accept. I don't want to talk about the decisions of John Brooks every time he's involved in Fulham games."
Fulham: Leno, Tete (Castagne 82), Diop, Bassey, Robinson, Berge (Sessegnon 82), Cairney (Bobb 61), Chukwueze, King (Smith Rowe 61), Iwobi, Jimenez (R Muniz 60)
