Fulham were beaten 1-0 by Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday afternoon.
Chances were at a premium throughout the game, with Josh King going closest in the first half, firing over after his smart run was found by Alex Iwobi.
The Black Cats offered much more after the break, and following a Wilson Isidor warning sign when he struck the post, the striker snatched the only goal of the game with quarter of an hour remaining.
Álvaro Arbeloa made one change to the side that met Chelsea on opening day, with Joachim Andersen preferred to Jorge Cuenca in defence, having served his suspension.
A low key beginning to the match didn’t give fans of either side too much to get excited about, with a dragged Enzo Le Fee strike and an easy save for Bernd Leno from Thomas Meunier sandwiching Iwobi’s blocked volley at the other end.
The first decent chance of the game fell Fulham’s way on 26 minutes when King’s intelligent run was picked out by Iwobi. The youngster took the ball down well but sent his left footed shot over the bar when being closed down by home goalkeeper Robin Roefs.
King’s movement was proving a great outlet for the Whites, and it led to another opening on the stroke of half-time. A brilliant dummy from Gonzalo García allowed him space on the left below slipping King through, but a crucial challenge from Reinildo robbed him of the chance to pull the trigger.
A stunning Sander Berge pass released Gonzalo for the first good opportunity of the second half, but Nordi Mukiele got a strong foot in to repel the shot as our number seven bore down on goal.
Sunderland had never seriously threatened the Fulham goal, but that changed on 71 minutes when a swirling Xhaka pass picked out Le Fee on the left wing. He immediately centred for substitute Isidor, but the substitute planted his first time strike against the foot of the post.
The striker should have done better, but he did not need long to make amends. Habib Diarra sprung Fulham’s high line to burst down the right flank, before squaring to Isidor for an open goal in the middle.
The Black Cats’ deep shape just got deeper as they looked to see out the contest, with Fulham unable to find a way through, and in fact it was the home side who came closest to grabbing the second goal of the afternoon when Romaine Mundle was kept out by Leno in stoppage time.
