It's not rocket science. We scored about 85 league goals last year (highest in championship). Highest was Cairney (12) & Johansen (11) both mid field. Third was Martin (no longer with us). Get two strikers who can each get 20 or so goals a season and big part of problem is solved

Benetez on 5 live' had these words to sum up newcastles night,,, WE HAVE GOT TO TAKE OUR CHANCES WHEN THEY COME!!!! I keep on saying this, about Fulham, We create plenty of chances to win games, but we must take them, when they come!!! Apart from being a bit slow in our build ups this season, i don't think it is a case of being sussed! A lot of other teams will go through a familiar process that we are going through. Seriously, if we weren't creating chances, that would have been a bigger worry. Just give the lads our support and i am sure we will tick again. I am not worried because i see the likes of newcastle and brighton struggling. We would not have been ready for the prem just yet....
Whilst it's more than likely that all 3 promoted clubs will struggle to remain in the Premiership, I am least surprised that Newcastle are already showing signs of distress. Despite gaining automatic promotion, I felt them to be the weakest of the promoted teams....I could see nothing that would suggest they could compete at the highest level.....we even turned them over: twice

do any of the you guys on this board think we dont need a target man centre forward
We need a player very similar to Glenn Murray, the sort of player who holds the ball up, can be a handful for Defenders and score 20+ goals in this division on a consistent basis. Brighton have just signed a new striker, go and give them £5m and snap him up.

Totally agree, a Glen Murray would really add some steel up front. He impressed when Brighton visited the Cottage last January. Isn't Robert Snodgrass surplus to requirement at West Ham? Or let's buy back Matt Smith from QPR - his personal goal tally for the season (i.e. one!) is already on a par with the entirety of the Fulham team.

Com'on be more original. We can't kee going back to these aging players! They do not have the pace for our game. Fonte only played one game and AK47 only played 2,5games. My concern is not the strikers but our midfield isn't playing the same as last season! They were the Brain of the team!

Dont need original. You need tried and trusted and proven to get out of this division

Personally, this should have been done months ago,I think K K and K are trying to replicate last season with cheap buys. Get a tried and tested Championship goalscorer and the problem should be solved.

Did we have a tried and tested Championship goal scorer last year? Remind me, where did we rate in goals scored in last year's Championship? How many was that? How many did our proven goal scorer score, here I'm assuming Martin score, was it 10?Who scored the rest I wonder?

Let's face it NONE of us know EXACTLY what goes on with regard to transfers regardless of what we read in the pres, what Slavisa says in pidgeon English or what Khan publicises (Kline doesn't seem to have a voice) so everything on this board (including what I write myself) is pure speculation...................but that's why we love it ;-))

just reading some of the feeds and clear we all have our views on the issue. In response, probably to Terry most, Joka has been recruited as a football coach, his terms of reference and contract is exactly that. He is not a manager. He can be thrown any players and it is his job to make a team of them. To coach and motivate them and to make them better players. He is not doing that this season. Furthermore, he needs to find a formation to suit the players he is given... he cannot dictate to the club who he wants to fit his one minded thinking, that is not what he is signed up to do. Of course, we can moan at this set up; many of us would certainly not wish to have this process...it never really works. But whilst it is that way Joka needs to get on with it and make a strong team of the players he has at his disposal. His media outbursts are a frustration of the process but he needs to start taking responsibility for what he does have power over and that is coaching the first team. I see lots wrong with his coaching at the moment.

Riverside, well articulated! I love SJ and he's the best thing happened to the club in a long long time. I love the style of football and I applaud what he did last season with 9 or 10 new players. However, i do just wish he stops putting out the clubs dirty laundry out for the public to see. It isn't helping anyone and also gives the players somewhere to hide for their bad performance. A united club is always more successful than a political one! I don't blame the coach. I don't blame the club. I think the players need to accept some blame! But let's not blame anyone - let's pull together and get a couple of wins under our belt!

His message is very clear even though English is not his first language. He needs clear support as we are in clear and present danger. What is our home record over the last two seasons? Answer : diabolical.

It's such a shame but all too predictable that a couple of people are now starting to doubt the coach. The reason is obvious. All summer these same people used to reply back to any message when anyone wrote of any concern facing our 'lack' of transfer action and the fact that we needed 3 or 4 players of the right quality to make this potentially the best team in the championship. They would write that it would all come good, the Khans and Kline knew what they were doing, you can't sign players early, long way to go in the transfer market even stating that there is no way SJ is not involved in the transfers then back tracking when he admitted he wasn't. Every comment wrote would be responded to by the club know what they are doing! Now they literally have egg on their face they have now realised that most fans on here did know what they were talking about they have turned to complain about SJ and his so called lack of tactics! Let's look at the real picture. SJ came to this club with us being at our lowest for years. The style of play and the quality of players were dreadful. We only just finished outside the relegation places a couple of times. The man came to us and transformed our style and results whilst still not having the right players at his disposal. The defence in particular. This is the man who came to the cottage when Watford annihilated us and won promotion the same as what we done to teams last season. No one in this division can live with the style of football he demands if played correctly. The players are not clicking yet and the ones signed look like they are not yet capable of playing this style yet. Nothing is harder to play against then a team that moves the ball very quickly. You don't necessarily need quick players (but it helps) you just have to be capable of moving the ball quicker. The team at the moment are failing to do this. It is not a case of being sussed out! The other problem we have is that there is no target man. This is why we have no plan 'B' SJ has mentioned this and been ignored and given Kamara that Khan said upon signing "It is a big day for Fulham". We have also signed too many similar style players. One comes off and one comes on and there is no difference in terms of style to change a game. We are in a mess and it is all down to Kline and Khan. All summer we have waited and have been given 'B' league players from other countries that are expected to play in one of the most competitive leagues from top to bottom in the world! (regarding the difference in quality). The club arranged very poor friendlies this year and with the late signings as may well have not bothered. Some complained about the team and lack of subs yesterday. SJ was right in what he done. This game was his only real chance because of the late signings to see what the new boys are capable of and hopefully the board were there to look at what they signed! Why risk first team regulars SJ knows what they are capable of and cannot afford any more injuries as we are already looking to have a very small nucleus of players to pick from. The problem lies completely with the clubs inept transfer system. Can you imagine being a coach and given players to work with by people who know absolutely nothing about football apart from reading a few stats? My 6 year old can do that. If you're in charge of a team then you should be given responsibility for the signings (except Magath). The managers are the tacticians who require players to work in a certain system not for the board to decide. As with the people that complain about his predictable post match comments are you saying he is wrong? He aways has an honest assessment. The players are too slow not moving the ball quick enough and not creating chances. The chance they have they are not taking. He's not happy with the transfers (like us) why can't he say that? Would you rather Symons comments after every match saying how unlucky we were and how hard they tried after yet another defeat? If your still reading this then I apologise for the rant. The real truth is that our foray into the playoffs last season was an over achievement and not expected by any but after the way the season finished it was clear with the right signings and as early as possible (only 3 or 4 at the time) that we would be contenders. Now we are left with this potential mess. In SJ we (the sensible ones) trust!
I back the manager 100%. Your right its the morons behind the scenes playing a fantasy game like little boys playing Football manager on the PC.

As my brain does not work as fast, or as up to date as you younger fans, I seem to be a bit confused with how the transfer system works with both the loaning and buying of players. Can I therefore ask, if we have now reached our limit as to how many loan players that we can have, and more importantly, are we allowed to buy another striker, or has our financial limit for buying in this window, now been reached ? ?

Please don't conflagrate a long diatribe with common sense. SJ signed a new contract, is the first team Coach, must have been involved with planning the preseason schedule, and was certainly responsible for last night's shambles. He must stop blaming everybody else, from players to directors, and start producing a proper tactical plan that delivers success.

Terry, I think you are roughly right with your thoughts and position. It is good to see that those who have been wearing rose tinted glasses have eventually gone to spec savers. Anybody taking bets on what position we will finish the season in? Playoffs, we need a miracle. If you can't hold your own at home we will never make promotion. Teams must love coming to the cottage. Anybody know our home win ratio over the last two seasons, it must be second half of the table at best?

Thanks MST. Football is all about options and your reply is appreciated. One last point if SJ were to be sacked in the future what top level manager would ever come in and take over out situation where there reputation is at stake over the signings of others? None is the answer. At best all we'll get is a manager using us just to see out there time and for and easy job and if it all goes wrong they can then blame the board if they can be bothered whilst getting paid the remainder of their contract after getting sacked themselves. A Martin Jol style character if you like.

What is happening? All this possession and nothing to show for it. It is so frustrating! I' m up at an unearthly hour to follow the game, a game which I had no doubt we would win but yet again have been disappointed. There is clearly something wrong. I feel it must come back to the coaching. The end product is abysmal. Bugger all the possession, let's get around to SCORING, isn't this what the game is about? And perhaps winning some games. I do believe that we have a good coach but something is missing. Think back to our shockingly terrible record with penalties last season. I have supported this club for 64 years it would be so nice to win something before I leave this mortal coil. So please let's go to plan B if there is one.
John, like you I have supported the club for 60+ years and like you I want us to win something before I pop off. All cups are important in my book and getting back into the Premiership and staying there is number 1 for me

Usually I sit in the Haynes stand but the kids wanted to sit in the Riverside last night so we sat in block WL, we were literally right next to the home dugout.

In my humble opinion Jokanovic was making a point last night, every time Marcelo, Kamara, Cisse, Norwood, Ojo made a error he was looking at the coaching staff and up to the directors box as if to say "Told you so"

If he wanted to turn that game around Sessegnon, Johanson and Fonte would have been introduced.

I might be wide of the mark as I don't how the manager behaves week in week out but for me last night was a sacrifice and he had a point to prove that some of these players we have signed are league one at best.

The only tactical change was to throw Marcelo up top for the last 5 minutes, there was nothing else at all coming from the bench to change anything and Jokanovic is a much better coach and manager than that!
If true that's no help to Fulham football club and he's only thinking of himself

People saying we didnt create enough chances clearly didnt go to the game. We dominated the s3cond half and created loads, but just couldnt finish as we had AK upfront, not rui fonte. Yes it was a poor performance, but those that didnt go to the game need to ReLax and trust in SJ
I was at the game and i'm not sure where your coming from. We had 2 shots on target in the whole match and they were very tame at best. The shots we did have off target I can only think that two of them were more than half chances, Kebano's shot over in the 85th minute and Kamara's header that nearly hit the corner flag in the 90th minute.

We were diabolical! In the final 3rd nobody took any responsibility whatsoever, it was pass it sideways and give it to someone else to mess up, Rovers just sat on the edge of their own box and must have thought it was xmas come early.

Seriously can you think of any other chances??

Btw.. Rovers should have won that game 3-0, only a brilliant save by Bettinelli kept us in the game for so long and their striker missed a 1 on 1 in the 1st half.

No long speeches from me now, and no need to panic guys. Apparently, Ipswich rested 11? and Slavisa followed suit. All i will say is try and keep the Fulham faith, and let's regroup and go for that win on Saturday. We have a good record against them and Macarthy isn't thinking this game on sat will be a walkover. Newcastl e are struggling,Brighton are struggling, and Huddersfield who we battered are doing great! We can't be that bad a team over night. When that first goal goes in? Fulham's season will kick off!!!!!!!
Owen, surely even you can see that the tactics being employed by Slavisa have been worked out by every manager we come up against.

Of curse there is need to panic. We played a League one Team last night who, by the way, also made several changes from Saturday and we could barely manage a shot, let alone one on target.

Slow sideways passing is not he way to win games and if we can't score against the likes of Bristol Rovers, what chance will we have when we come against a resolute Ipswich defense with a better tactician at the helm. Same goes for Cardiff.

Hopefully you are right, the panic was not justified and we will have three points on the board on Saturday.........somehow I doubt it though :-((((.
posted by MST (Moderator) - Wednesday 23rd August 2017, 6:24 AM
Whether we like it or not, the panic button is being polished and primed. There is simply no glossing over the fact that we have had an awful start to the season. Yes, the opening fixtures were tough, but the results this week have been a real body blow, and I'm not quite sure where we go from here. The next 4 games will determine whether Jokanovic has a future. No, he won't be sacked, just yet, but will limp along, mortally wounded, unless we see a great improvement in the forthcoming games. In truth, we have neither played well, nor deserved any better. The dreadful preseason preparation has to be the responsibility of Jokanovic: he spent too much time whinging rather than focussing on the task in hand. No more excuses: he must deliver

My thoughts exactly, Rm. I also feel SJ picked a particularly weak starting 11 yesterday with possibly an exception of one or two. The result being we lost at home to frankly the second best team from Bristol, who a couple of seasons ago were non-league. And I've had a rubbish night's sleep because of it!
posted by Stu (Guest) - Wednesday 23rd August 2017, 8:06 AM
It's not the selection yesterday that is really the problem. It's the result, which has only served to dampen morale and deepen the pervasive gloom settling over the team. I remember that, under Hodgson, the style of play was relayed through the entire club, so that there was a common theme at all levels. I feel the same today, but not in a positive way

Who is to blame. Tony Khan for his money ball approach where how players fit and gel is not a statistic your can assess or SJ or more likely the players who are hungover from last season. Against SW we didn't hit the target until late on and had a number of good chances. We need to learn to shoot which is depressing as it's basic but that's what lacking and I don't see Khan is at fault or SJ for players who are good loosing a basic skill.

There is no need to have an after match report, after the Ipswich match on Saturday, all he has to say is ditto ditto, see last Tuesday's match report, as it will be exactly the same. I am heartedly fed up with it. Will someone please tell me who is responsible for signing that clown Kamara, and even Sutton United have better forwards than him. I would not care if he never plays for us again, and he is making Chris Martin look like a top class centre forward, and that's really difficult. Unless we bring in a forward who can find the onion bag, this season is heading for a disaster. It's not too late to put things right, but it is getting very close to a time to panic.

I watched Brighton play Barnet tonight, and Brighton made 11 team changes, and they should have lost to Barnet, who at least made an effort, Brighton were terrible, and by all reports Fulham were the same. Why do the leagues allow these unwanted cup matches to be played so early in the season, when not one team will put out a full strength team, as they have no interest of progressing further, as they want to play less matches, not more. Both Brighton and Newcastle got out quick last season to concentrate on more important matches. I for one, am well pleased that we are out, apart from having to lose to a team a division lower, was a bit of an embarrassment. That does rankle. COYW

But instead he had to wait for poor signings that arrived so late he is still trying to work out what to do with them! These players are not good enough to play his style of high quality technical football. There lies the problem! And with no strong powerful target man he doesn't have a plan B to change things around! Very limited to what he can do. Your suggestions welcome! Long ball and crosses to a team of 5 foot 5 forwards? Ever wondered why we never score from corners?

But Terry, SJ still picks the team and provides the tactics. Did you watch the game? It looked to me like a deliberate attempt to sabotage the match to prove a point. Poor team selection, slow build up play, no cutting edge (again), a lack of substitutions and no change in tactics.

Cairney has played one game in the last four, MacDonald two. Are you telling me they could not have done with a run out to improve match fitness? Why was Fonte not used from the bench either?

I'm sorry but in my opinion there is only one person to blame for last night's defeat and that ain't Khan or Kline.

It is a strong indicator of our capabilities if we can't win at home, regardless of whatever competition we are in. Of course we have won so many trophies we can afford to pick and choose when we perform - not!

Wrong attitude Marco...of course you should care about the cup. Not least it is a forum to give game time to fringe players. Losing at home is bad, not scoring at home is bad but even worse to a team in a lower division. Seems as if Joka has become totally clueless. Not sure if he wants out or what. Tactics totally lame tonight, team generally not motivated. Team was set up to beat Bristol tonight but we failed, take responsibility Joka. Mentioned before, Joka needs to start earning his money. Massive game for us on Saturday, we need to score some goals!

SJ needed to know if Kline's signings were any good. Now he knows kamara & Djalo are lumbering, predictable & not overly skillful. Oyi is not a patch on sessignon, so cannot be a regular first teamer, Kebano & Cisse are average at best. Let's hope Fonte is good & Soares can make up a bit for the loss of Malone. With luck, few injuries, good form from our best players we MAY make the playoffs. That's of course if Kline f'o's back to the US of A. A damp miserable apathetic evening, brightened only by the kebab on the way home. Also please can someone at the club do something about the idiot, midget. ponytailed police morons who insist I have to get the train at putney bridge station, when I want to get to Hurlingham park FFS !

For all people complaining about SJ on here ("he's one sided...no plan B"), we have to bare in mind what he has done compared to others. He has brought an attractive style that we love and other managers don't have. Replacing him with who, there are no obviously choices available and you might be left with a kit symons or felix magath alike. Stop being short sited and trust in the guy that bought u play off football after finishing 19th&20th. Having gone to all games (including cup) so far, I still don't believe we have been fully sussed, but are just playing good opposition and are suffering from a poor and lax pre season. Please calm down, I'm especially disappointed with MST, usually a voice of reason!!

Fulham always create a lot of chances, which equates to goals sooner rather than later. I want us to stop having a dig at our players, and get behind them instead. Let's all have a group hug and show some love! Not that soppy french kissi kiss on the cheeks guys' just show some appreciation when we put a good move on our opposition (Applauds) Believe it or not, our guys are working hard, they are playing their hearts out. Tom Cairney has said that he had no pre season prep, and i promise you he is chomping at the bit! Tom will work hard a get fitter. I watched our highlights again against Sheff Weds, and we play excellent football. I would never want to see Fulham play route 1 football, that would be boring. The pundits all marvel at our style of play, why would we change it? That Aluko header came a bit high, and we must forgive him for not latching on to it. Aluko isn't the tallest, but he will run his heart out for fulham. Remember last season we were frustrated with him, then he had a golden period and he got himself (MOTM TWICE I THINK?) All Alukos goals and assist contributed to our top 6 finish. You can't expect wingers to get 25 goals, and if you look at the ratio of goals without a central striker, the lads were chipping in 10 to 12 goals each on average. If we are likened to barca, that is a complement which is fantastic for Fulham. So if we give ur players a break, and just show them some appreciation, i am sure the goals will come. We have a fantastic group of players at our club, i honestly believe that.....
Agree with you all the way my son. But with some on here its like pis;;ing in the wind

I totally agree with this post. I can't believe some people questioning the team and manager. I watched the highlights of the game against Wednesday and we played well just lacked cutting edge. We cut through them on plenty of occasions and just lacked the finish. Rui fonte had only been in the country a couple of days. We have to give him time. I would suggest we give it till the end of September and if we are still struggling then I would begin to worry. But this is the championship and anyone can beat anyone. We have to get behind the manager and players tomorrow and Saturday. 3 points could see us shoot up the table. COYW!

Owen as much as I love your optimistic and morale lifting posts, your are kidding yourself. It's not the players. All but one of the starting 11 on Saturday were first team regulars last season. It's the tactics. We have no plan B. Even at 1-0 down with with five minutes to go we are wasting time passing out from the keeper and across the back four before the ball gets anywhere near the oppositions box. There is no urgency in our game and it's the same old story when Jokanovic gives his after game interviews - always moaning about what he hasn't got rather than getting on and coaching the players he has got. I don't believe Jokanovic is the mastermind that many on this board believe and other managers have worked him out. Yes it's still early days and of course a win or two changes everything but many of us cannot see where that is coming from whilst we have no cutting edge. Watching highlights does not give you a true representation of the game, especially when they are heavily censored and biased towards Fulham. Trust me as one who goes to at least 75% of all games that we are not looking good mate.....

Players don't define the tactics moreline. Jokanovic has a plethora of players at his disposal now and if he doesn't like the recruitment policy (and I am not saying I do or don't) why sign an improved and extended contract and say he could stay at Fulham for 10 years? In my opinion Jokanovic should be doing better and it doesn't take a footballing genius to work out that if you're 1-0 down with five minutes to go, route one might be worth a try but yet we stick to crab football at a snail's pace. I've been his advocate for some time now but to be honest it's becoming boring to watch and I'd like to see our game mixed up a bit. I don't think I'm alone in that either....

I don't buy this plan B tosh. You have to believe in the way you play. Some days it won't happen but there is absolutely nothing in anything I've seen in 40 years of watching football that suggests that lumping the ball into the box in the last five minutes is any more successful than playing football on the floor. It may feel more exciting or give you something to shout about but, like corners, it's no more effective. The system works, the players are definitely at the top end of this division. We need to move the ball around a bit quicker but that normally comes with confidence and having more than 3 of the team playing well. It will all be alright in the end. Just calm the f&££ down...
posted by bassim - Monday 21st August 2017, 10:09 PM
Bassim and Chris in the post above. I can only say it as I see it and for the last 12 months I have supported Jokanovic and what he has tried to do but watching passing for the sake of passing is not attractive to me and especially when you are not winning it becomes boring to watch. If you think pragmatically, our finish last year was just as much about Leeds' implosion as Fulham's finale. Yes we got some good results that I enjoyed massively but we had some pretty awful results as well - look back and recall how you felt when we lost and drew to teams we all expected to put to the sword. As I've written previously, it is still early days and a couple of wins will change everything (including my perspective) but at the moment the football is turgid in my opinion. Sorry but that's how I feel and for me the buck stops with Jokanovic as they are his tactics.
posted by MST (Moderator) - Monday 21st August 2017, 10:43 PM
Not often I disagree with you, MST, but your comment about luck that Leeds imploded is unfair. The whole point about last year is that despite missing so many penalties, first and last minute lapses and some pretty awful performances, we did make the playoffs. My disappointment this year is that we had an awfully mismanaged pre season and have failed to continue where we left off, despite an improved squad and investment by the Chairman. Last season showed that the standard in this division is not as good as everyone says, and that Fulham should really be challenging for an automatic promotion spot. Sadly, the result on Saturday cannot be airbrushed or explained away with excuses about referees, bad luck, or Khan. Responsibility has to be taken by Jokanovic...I'm not saying he should be sacked, but simply that he needs to take a long hard look in the mirror, stop whinging and start delivering

Agree with Owen like last season we're creating golden oppurtunites again early on and not taken them time to worry is when you dont createto be honest even if you know our system when we are on our game still difficult to stop at the risk of being boring one of the leagues top scorers last year it's still early days points in this league can be made up but we need to get a couple of straight wins under our belt

Fulham next 3 league games are against Ipswich (100% record so far), Cardiff (100%) and Hull (was a premier league team). Normally you'd say if you can get 4 points you'd be happy against 3 top teams. Unless Fulham ft their acts together quickly, even 4 points will be difficult. Even if we get 4 points, do you think SJ's job would be at risk? From the chairman's perspective, despite the success of last season, that would be a bad return on investment after 7 games. The last thing we need is our manager getting the sack but I'd never say never! We need a settled team asap .
We should be looking for 9 points, as we are not as bad as our results are suggesting, and both Ipswich and Cardiff are flattering to deceive. We beat Hull comfortably enough last season in the cup, and they had a far better team than they have now. A good win at Ipswich will set the ball rolling.

It turns out that left-sided Scott Malone's role on that left side, was crucial in our game after all. I was looking out for that striker of Huddersfield that we might have signed, and completely not noticed that Malone wasn't playing against Newcastle. Somebody on here was referring to our attacking play on the right side breaking down and not working and so and so? It's a funny thing that happens when fulham gets rid of 1 player in particular, and our shape goes to pot. That attack system on our left side was so crucial to young Ryon Sess's game, which was a problem for the opposition. Slavisa and our coach will work out a new solution eventually when we can persuade someone left sided to get on board with us. And then it will be a gamble if he is good enough in that Scott Malone role. Scotty fitted into our game plan and not Huddersfields! If we could undo this transfer in a hurry? (we can't) i would be happy. We have to make do with what we have got now, and roll on to the next game. Our current bunch of new players are not bad,but we need to gel. Tom Cairney will need to work harder and get back into the swing of things... A win is crucial to Fulham, and will settle everyone. It will take some hard work and sussing out from our coaching staff for sure, but we have the players to do this...
Evidence of first 4 games is that our problem is a lack of a forward who can hit the target or get on the end of a cross. We are trying to pas the ball into the net and Barcelona we are not. Players need to get their shooting boots on. New 9 was pretty anonymous but first game, AK looks good but no understanding with team mates. I agree with manager all too slow and so sides have time to organise.
posted by Phil (Guest) - Monday 21st August 2017, 7:48 AM
Totally agree Phil but even when we do get chances and half chances Aluko can't hit a barn door with a banjo - think we should cash in and replace him with someone who can get a header or shot on target but is still a tricky winger........or we did OJO!!!. Thought, considering Fonte had not even had one training session with the team, he applied himself well but his chances were limited. God only knows why he is taking corners and free kicks or even standing over free kicks and not taking them. Thought he was supposed to be a good poacher, well he ain't gonna poach anything from 40 yards out.
posted by MST (Moderator) - Monday 21st August 2017, 10:33 AM
The expression is "can't hit a cows a*se with a banjo". & Fonte has played as a winger almost as much as a striker. He is generally speaking more of a forward player than & out & out striker. He usually took the corners on that side for Braga. That's why he took it. Nothing unusual.
posted by Ara (Guest) - Monday 21st August 2017, 1:35 PM
I take it then, from the above messages, that we are still expecting to sign an out and out striker, and therefore is Rolan, on our shopping list, I wonder ? There doesn't seem to be any enquiries about him, from any Premier League clubs, and the Newcastle interest in him seems to have gone cold, so maybe we are still in with a chance of signing him, although he will probably wait until the last deadline day, before he makes up his mind.

Mick's riding high and I can see why as a Manager he can spot a centre forward and a goal scorer for miles. At least Ipswich listen to their Manager. How come Fulham did not get his chaps from Scotland? You lads are dead right we should not have sold Malone, as defence has not been our strong point of late. Well, we'll have to see if any of the host of loan stars are up to Wyatt Earps billing, because we need someone quick on the draw when they see the bloody goal to have a poke. Bound to score eventually but three draws and a losing at home things can only get better as Tony Blair used to say as he sent us war in Iraq. Got to get behind our boys but new lads will take time to settle.
Not sure I agree with you about our defence - we've conceded three in four. It's our attack that needs sorting we've only scored two goals and one of those was an own goal whilst the other was a gift!

Well Rich If you r seriously using Mick MacCarthy as an example perhaps you should have a think about how many seasons he has been in charge at Ipswich It is too early in the season to believe that he has finally got it right but if he has then surely the message is to give managers a chance rather than call for their heads at the first sign of alleged trouble.

Whilst we wait for something to kick start our season, I believe one must always learn from negatives and others experiances. Although at two different levels ,FFC start the season with everybodys talking bout "fantasy football".Same way after Spain won the world cup. come next matches and most clubs have sussed the systems and play to kick those giving value for money entertainment out of the ground.Add this to as many injuries in 2-3 games as in the whole of last season and its back to the drawing board. We insist in playing 10 -15 passes specially on the right wing which consume too much time. If we now have 2 number 9s then it will have to be 3-4 touches and into the box.at least thats how i see it.On saturday we probaly fielded our best 11 on paper.I for one would have betted seriously on us winning, but this is football,so anything can happen in the next half hour. Were do we go from here? personally Im fully in the belief that most players, Slavisa and the board have made a serious commitment to promotion. We have a stronger squad than last year, which in principel should mean that starting from tuesday ,a strong line-up has to be fielded vs bristol rovers or else expensive purchases wont get a kick.Last season we got 11 pòints from 5 matches in august but come the international brake, our castles were knocked down with 3 miserable points from the following 5 september matches. there is no reason why we cant beat ipswich next sat. Why we cant win most of our sept matches. In other words, id much rather get things going now than going through the pains of last sept. Its simply a question not playing into the enemies hands. COYW

After watching Huddersfield and Newcastle playing this afternoon, it just looked like a glorified Championship match. Although they have started well, I can see Huddersfield having a job staying up, along with Brighton. Newcastle may just survive though. By the way why on earth to Malone join Huddersfield, as he hasn't had a sniff of a game so far, and he is only going to be a bench warmer there at best. We miss him a lot, and unless we sign a good replacement, we must have been stupid in letting him go.
But Spurs v Chelsea was a proper Premier game !

Hand up all of us fans that are pleased that we didn't gain promotion last season. Yes I thought so, 16000 plus. If we had of been promoted, we would have had a season of embarrassing results, as we were not strong enough at the end of last season to have survived the Premier League this season. Another season, or maybe even two, will enable us to have a solid Premier League side, with a then comfortable survival chance. Joka is building a really good side, that will take a little time to gell, but we will get there, that I am sure of. COYW

opinions just now are harsh and you cant judge him on one performance. He ran and ran in the first half and needed a second striker to play with. Having him on his own was a uneducated decision from our coaches and the lad dropped deep in the second half to get more of the ball and that just gave us no outlet once we had the ball. Bringing on different players in the midfield made no difference in our style of play and only when Kamara came on did we start to look more balanced, but it was far to late and a well groomed side like Wednesday were in control and the game was won.

Anyone would think we were in the last four games of the season, not the first four. I seem to recall a certain West London Club putting 5 past Reading and Huddersfield (9 goals actually) and did we hear their fans saying well that's it for this season? We had a bad day at the office. Some of the fight from the previous week was missing and should have done better with the chances we had, but not even Newcastle had a brilliant home record in their promotion bid. Every team has their problems. I agree that trying to read into what our manager said or didn't say and analyzing his every word is not helpful. But he stated at the beginning of the season he was staying and until officially told otherwise I am sticking by him. A bad day at the office that's it we bounce back we're Fulham. COYWs (In the racing and Football betting paper they had Owls down as Champions by the way).
Well said Freddie, a dose of reality and common sense, that hopefully won't be lost on those of us who are prone to a touch of panic.

He did comment on the first signing, odjo, and cleatly said he did not want him. When we signed kamara he commented that he did not know what he brought to the team. His interview on sky clearly showed how unhappy he was about the transfer "policy" and when asked if he had worked under a similat system in the past he said no and that he would never work under a similar system in the future. In my opinion the signings have been generally very poor and are hardly good enough to go straight into the team. Hence kamara, cisse and odjo on the bench. £9million is a lot of money for a player from braga and think if we had actually looked at some players the manager wanted wecould have done much better. Messrs khan and kline are applying a system which works in american sports like baseball and the nfl where players do not have to gel together as a team like they do in football. In thise sports they are given specific jobs to do when they are brought on, do them and are taken off again. Real success at any clubs has only come about by developing your own players and/or with a team of experienced scouts watching potential signings and making their recommendation to the manager who then goes and watches them. Really hope the new players work out but it does seem likely from what we seen so far. Really ,really hope they do but will always think the stats system is a bad,bad ti sign players that have to work together in a team.
Gosh are you saying the manager didn't want any of the new players ? I must say I'm not sure if Kamara and Fonte can play together I thought they play in the same position also we are well covered for left wingers with Ayite Kebano and Sess who really is a left winger in my humble opinion he is certainly no defender

Well said. Some idiots on here anti SJ and all for the boards transfer system. Has anyone ever heard of these players before we signed them? Toughest championship ever and the coach who knows more about football then a couple of people playing Fifa stats with our team involved in with our transfers. We will improve but cannot believe the way this club is run. Spanish and French B division are nowhere near the level of our league. In SJ I trust!

Story circulating that when Fonte played for Crystal Palace, he was so bad that the Palace fans made him a laughing stock, and that they were so pleased when he left. From what I saw of him yesterday, I must admit that I was not that impressed, although he looked a bit fitter than Chris Martin, but at this stage he is not any better. Time alone will tell.

Today's Sun says that we are about to sign central defender Rob Atkinson, from Basingstoke. He has been on trial with us during the last week, and he has been very impressive. They also say that Middlesboro' are lining up a bid for Tim Ream, and that we will want a fee in the region of 2 million. It sounds like that there is still a lot of movement to be done yet, before the window closes.

They've probably heard from pundits that we play some of the best football in the division and they believe it. Well boys let me tell you. You've been sussed and your style isn't that hard to deal with.

Our transfers are managed by what amounts to an amateur betting syndicate, based on a Hollywood movie. We've lost one of our best 2 players from last season & our rivals have improved their squads, & most have done so earlier than us too. Hopefully SJ can make something out of it in time. There's a lot riding on how good Fonte is too. No pressure.

We've been sussed? Our style is very difficult to play against. We just haven't clicked yet. It's the players not the style that are not switched on yet! Comparing us to last seasons and the teams that have sussed us this year? Norwich (H) we drew. Reading (A) drew and lost (not scoring in 2.5 games). Leeds (A) we drew again. Sheff Wed (H) we managed a late equaliser against one of the best organised teams in the division. Is it Jokas fault Sone can't finish from a corner? (completely missing it). Is it Jokas fault McDonald headers over wide unchallenged? Is it Jokas fault the Ryan S doesn't look up and square the ball for a tap in with the owls defence split apart? Is it Jokas fault Kalas got himself sent off at Reading in the first minute? Is it Jokas fault Piazon broke his leg after starting so well? Is it Jokas fault he has been given players he has not asked for? Is it Jokas fault he still has no idea as to what is happening in this transfer window? (now with talk of Ream leaving). Is it Jokas fault a lot of players have been signed so late he hasn't had a chance to work out how they fit into this team? Is it Jokas fault the key orchestrator TC has been injured and not match fit? A lot of the players need to look at themselves in terms of performance and SJ will get the best from what he has. August and early September are now our friendly fixtures with regard to get the right balance in the team. I'm watching a premiership match right now where we done the double over both scoring 13 and conceding 2 in the process. Is that Jokas fault as well. Give the man the credit he deserves. Some of the best football played down here last season since the days of Tigana. Open your eyes and look at what's really happening at the club!

cannot believe a couple of posters on here are doubting the manager , the only thing that dont need fixing at fulham is janko , shape up or ship out there saying , i think the good news for riverside , , longball and rm , is hes probably packing as we speak , a year ago we sold our 2 best players and bought a whole team with the same money 12 mill if i recall , and he nearly got us up , and that after they sh-t on him and us in january not to mention the debacle with martin , be carfull wot you wish for , we could get grey and kline ,
We kept nearly all our best players despite decent bids, we kept all the good youngsters despite clubs wanting them, we brought in about five new players who haven't had time to gel but hopefully they will prove to be good. The club has done everything asked of them which led to them being made betting shop favourites for promotion. its down to the manager to get this team playing together so don't blame the club for the current situation. I am confident it will come together but lets just give it time before everyone starts shouting for heads again.

I'm not shouting for Jokanovic to be fired. I'm simply pointing out that Khan can no longer be blamed for everything that is going wrong at the club. We have the players, the set up and everything else needed to challenge for a top spot. There is no glossing over yesterday's performance, tactics or result: simply not good enough. I also maintain that our ore seasin preparations were unhelpful, either on terms of motivation or results. There appeared to be a distinct lack of planning, and that must be the responsibility of Jokanovic. He needs to stop whinging to the Press, and get his team to start performing. Please don't have a go at me, guys, but you have to admit that some of our tactics don't add up to a challenge for the Premiership, and Khan may no longer be the problem?

I follow odds closely we were never the favourites. You said it, we didn't sign players with enough time to gel. Khan repeated the same mistake as last year. We would of finished top, if the season started in October last year. We should of brought players before the friendliest so they could learn our sophisticated style, that's what friendlies. Are for. Don't blame Slav it's not his fault we signed our first team striker once we already played a few games just like last year. Moving from another country and expect him to be banging them in. The stats don't account for foreign player settling in or time to gel but Jr can't be told.

Well said Tim, Stability starts from the top, Kamara arrived two days before the season started. Fonte and Ojo two days before our fourth match, all three unproven at this level.Suppose the Porto full back will arrive on deadline day also unproven in English football Is Aluko to be sold to offset the cost of Fonte, as there is only a year difference in their ages. On the subject of loan players some come with penalty clauses about appearances, which also can cause friction between management and coach. Hardly the best way for a flying start to the season, with the fixtures as they were. My opinion, for what its worth is that Jokanovic and his coaching team are vital to our future, it also seems that the management have preset ideas about resale values and age. The combination of this is hindering the one thing that would make everyone happy. Promotion with the monetary rewards that would bring, leaving the owner able to sell FFC at a higher price should he wish
posted by denny (Guest) - Sunday 20th August 2017, 11:42 AM
You don't follow them that closely as we were 7/1 joint favourites with Hills, Paddy power and Betfred along with villa and Midlesborough. I studied it to get the best odds. We are still in fact 5th favourites with Hills despite our poor start at 10/1. Lots of clubs will not let players go at the start of a transfer window and hold out for better prices and more negotiations or to see if other clubs are interested thats why so much business is still going on including with top clubs and players. If it was that easy all business would be done in the first couple of weeks. This together with the fact we could not get several other targets stop it from being as simple as you make out.

I wasn't at the match yesterday but assuming the assessment here is accurate, it sounds like we're back to where we were some 12months ago when we were pinging the ball around but with no real aggression or penetration. I am guessing Wednesday, like all other teams, sat back absorb the pressure then punch us on the counter. It's worrying we are now only a point from the bottom three. We've been there before, and once you are there it is mentally difficult to get out. We have Ipswich next so it's not going to be easy. I disagree with the comments out style of football will it work. I think the issue is we have a few unsettled players. Aluko, Maconald, Frederick and possbly Cairney. Our key players!! The sooner we get to the end of the transfer window the better for these players to concentrate on the football.
I was at the game, Wednesday certainly did not sit back, they had as much of the game as Fulham. Teams have worked Fulham out, keep pressing us, dont give us time on the ball, and because of this our passing gets worse, we start passing to players that are tightly marked or we pass and give the ball away. I DONT like naming players but Aluka yesterday was awful,I lost count the number of times he lost the ball, he missed 2 scoring chances in the first half, he was playing like someone who wanted to be somewhere else, maybe Reading, Obviously we can only get better,we need to do more pressing ourselves, instead of standing back and allowing the opposition time and space.

Jok should started with Kamara, told him to bully their defence, then brought on Fonte after one hour, told him to focus on scoring. To start with Fonte who knew nothing what was expected of him was a bad coaching decision, IMO.

Obviously disappointing Aluko played like a player about to be sold Johansen and Cairney struggling in mid field might have to drop Johansen Norwood needs to start games Odoi needs to be somewhere central we need a left footed left back to support Sess down the left Jokanovic has his work cut to integrate Kamara and Fonte marginally better than same position last year but manager will prevail
OUR MANAGER has his work cut out to manage properly. The team plays so predictable that any decent manager has them sussed. This playing out from the back at all costs even with 2 minutes to go ,I ask you . He has brainwashed this team. Why dont these so called great signings start. The mid field including cairny are are totally sub standard. If this team does not score in the first half they are done for.SJ is will make late late subs.when its too late. again predictable.Forget last season Its the .manager who needs to change his tactics ,either shape up or ship out.

The arrival of new players is bound to disrupt the team. It takes time to gel, and we'll probably begin to pick up in a couple of months time when the Squad knows what's expected of them. After 4 games, I'm not that concerned, and our quality will see us challenging the top six by season's end.

Anyone else missing Malones marauding runs from left back... Not moaning just saying I enjoyed watching his efforts.
Mentioned today at the game by many - Malone is a big loss to the team. Marauding runs, goals, a good left foot and a defender.

I'm all for keeping hold of our best talent but genuinely think we should of cashed in on cairney sess and aluko and re-invested when we had the chance. Can't see cairney hitting same heights as last year and 20 mill extra would of been welcome, sess has great potential but will only ever be as good as the players round him and to be honest although will get plenty of game time he'll hit a level and plateau so 25 mill up front with plenty of add ons would of been a fair cop and quite frankly anything we got/get for aluko would be a bonus. With the exception of a good run 5 or 6 times a season he's a liability with the worst finishing in the league a conversion rate of 6% with second most shots in the league last year. Both ayite and kebano Are more productive in front of goal. Really hope am proved wrong but everyone seems to have figured us out and we needed a few changes to the way we play to liven us up abit I was obvious in the playoffs that all you had to do was pack the middle of to stop us being a threat, dont give Fredericks the freedom to run and you're laughing. Hoping for vast improvements but not seeming likely at the moment
if we had 20 mill 2 invest would you trust our moneyballers with it, wede probably end up with colin mcgregor in goal

Was today just one of those days? Don't think so. Joka needs to sort things out, his one tactic approach has been well and truly sussed. His rants at the Directors are unhelpful. News of the owner wanting to sell is unsettling and the new signings look very average at best. Cairney clearly not match fit, Aluko looked unhappy and the team laboured today. Sheffield Wednesday did a job on us. Joka needs to roll up his sleeves, stop moaning and get the team playing to the level of last season at the very least. Then we need to get to a higher level of play even if we want an outside chance of the top 6, at the moment we are way short. Joka needs to start earning his wages, and fast!
SJ can only work with what he has been given. The man is the best thing that has happened to our club in years! If he has been given 2nd division Spanish and French players and they are not good enough to play in his style of (normally) fast paced attacking stylish football then that's not his fault. He won admiration from everyone in football last season. Would you our last two managers back? What worries me is time and time again he has stated that the players he has been given are not the ones he asked for. Even today in his post match statement he spoke about we are no longer playing friendlies but he is still trying to work out the team. By this he means he is frustrated by how long it took the club to sign players when pre season it should have been sorted so he could use this time for the players to gel and work out indeed what the starting team should be. Needed to hit the ground running with only 3 signings required to be automatic contenders now we are playing catch up already and it's all down to the board which I also believe will SJ as a scapegoat and sack him if the poor run continues.

I agree with Riverside that our tactics seem to be one dimensional and even when substitutions were made today, like for like players were brought on for Aluko and Johansen and our approach to the game did not change - sideways passing and no urgency. We only went two up top with 10 minutes left and I don't think Kamara touched the ball did he? I've seen him a few times now and if this is what you get for £5m, I'm sorry but we should have kept our money in our pocket as I really don't rate him. Hopefully, Jokanovic can sort this out and quickly but I do agree that he has to stop moaning and concentrate on picking the best team and providing them with the tactics to win games and fast. We are still only four games into the season so we have plentry of time to make a challenge but fans will stop turning up if we don't get a win soon - I even heard a few boos late on.

Had three half decent performances without Tom Cairney, what does that tell us today. In. My personal opinion (for what it's worth) I don't think he works hard enough. He seems to have taken all his passing skills from Scott Parker but has forgotten about the other side of the game I.E work ethic which Parker had as a younger man
Tom Cairney definitely did not look on top of his game. Back to the old days to many sideways passes. Lack of pace going forward and players constantly failed to run into spaces. Fredricks was going mad, attacks down the wing and forwards all stand looking at him waiting, presumably, for the pass that never came, too static. Thought Oliver Norwood looked far better reader of the game than Tom, on the day at least, and looks much better captain material, marshalling the defence and communicating. Distribution good too. We also failed, in the second half to close people down, back of too much and gave them space. Another good performance from Button, only one heart stopping moment. Had to play Hammy End linesman.....again, where do they get them from? Disappointing all round, much work needed down Motspur Park this week.

Can't believe this post. TC is pure class. His passing and control are normally fantastic. The best players make it look so easy that people that do not understand the game (and probably never played) think they are being lazy or not performing. Today TC had a poor game but the lad is coming back from an injury and playing his first game of the season against players who have performed in 4 matches already and are match fit. Give the boy a chance!

Button , Ream & Kalas did nothing wrong , but the rest were so disappointing . Cairney and Johanson created nothing , Aluko and Fredericks in particular looked tired and leggy . So many passes to a player already tightly marked , little running into space .
S Wed were not great , but took their one real chance well .
Its too early to panic , but if we allow the top 2 to get 15 points ahead of us , its difficult to pull back . with Ipswich and Cardiff up next , its in our own hands , but neither will be easy .
Obviously I am still thinking about promotion rather than relegation , despite what the table is currently showing .
We will not be relegated, nor find ourselves in a relegation battle. But it is equally clear that we will not gain automatic promotion. Perhaps we expect too much from Jokanovic, and he us not the Messiah.

Six hours of play so far, one goal scored by a Fulham player. And he's out until Christmas. The teams at the top are almost into double figures. Apparently we've signed a new number nine this week, did anyone see him today? I think Wednesday well deserved the points. They were more urgent, closed down the space, and stopped our usual flowing style. Perhaps we've been found out? We squandered a handful of scoring chances, whereas Wednesday took their's. Probably no need to panic just yet, keep the faith....but.....

He might be going to the Premier League, but we most certainly won't be, this or any other season, if today was anything to go by. I thought that today was an abject failure, and if Fonte is the answer, than what is the question. We are sitting in 19th spot in the table at the moment, and another relegation fight season looks to be in front of us. If we can manage to keep out of the drop zone that will be an achievement, with this side. Never mind we have a really exiting cup match this week against the mighty Bristol Rovers. I for one will not be there to watch such an pathetic battle, and I am a real fan, but there is only so much that we can put up with.

This looked like a team that had played 46 games and was at the end of the season feeling jaded. Cairney didn't look fit and our shots on goal must have been in low single figures. SJ has a lot of work to do if he's going to haul this lot back to last seasons standard. There was no man of the match they all played below their best. Interested to hear post match analysis from SJ, he surely must have blown his top at this performance.

Odoi, Ream and Kalas played okay. I'm not sure what impact Norwood is gonna have off the bench in games? Aluko was poor today and his work rate was way below par, last season when we were up against it everyone still wanted the ball, today a few too many went missing

We've been blaming Khan for so long, that we've lost sight of the real problem. There can be no excuse for our poor start: our pre season was awful, and we have suffered ever since. Jokanovic has been given enough players and so he must take full responsibility if we fail this season. The players have little sense of urgency, and seem to be playing with self entitlement rather than true grit and determination. If Jokanovic can't motivate them, then somebody else must. I give him until Xmas. Let's stop blaming Khan
