So how long before pensions are mean tested,as i read we are paying out a fortune on pensions to people who dont need it , million quid and plus in bank we pay them a few hundred quid a week, crazy it amounts to over a billions a year so i read , not my words or thoughts but wondered how the older folk feel on this site ?. Does it seem right kids cant buy a house or pay rent when older folk get triple lock rises, and this is about millions of folk who own properties all earned i know by hard work, but think about the entertainment world all those over 60s getting state pensions ??? just some thing to muse over till west ham .

Regardless of your means, if you pay NI all your working life you should always be entitled to state pension otherwise, what’s the point??

They will start on the rich and then move onto the ordinary folk... you will be a pensioner one day.

Kids can’t buy a house because too many people are chasing too few houses. Think the phrase too many people is important. Labour was purportedly the champion of the working class but it appears they want to concentrate on imported non working individuals who will drain the system more quickly and efficiently than British pensioners ever will. Tories are the same but Labour will accelerate the process. Immigration and net zero will destroy the UK and some idiot puts up a post blaming hard working pensioners. O’Doors is retiring early next year and the UK exchequer will get nothing from him from then onwards. They will not fritter another penny of mine on detritus.

Agreed Paddy... plus Labour won't get away with blaming the Tories forever.

I worked from the age if 14, so I have paid my taxes for every year of my working life, and I have lived under Labour, Conservatives and a coalition government, and by far the worst, have always been Labour governments, as they are rip off merchants, and always will be, and having this lot in charge is going be hell, over the next five and it will be like being in prison under a dictatorship under Mr flip flop, the awful Keir Starmer, and the even worse, the completely useless Rachel Reeves. They conned the electorate with their promises of change, and you Labour voters will now live to target it, as yes it is change, but a change for armageddon.

PS Pointless; my state pension is the higher amount of £12,380 pa because I paid the higher rate of NI for 30+ years. May I remind you that the minimum wage is nearly double that at c£23,000!!!! Just because I saved all my life as well so that I can live a little less stressfully, why should I give up my "few hundred quid a week". You should be ashamed of yourself for even considering such a post!! In addition, my wife worked for the NHS most of her life caring for people and saving lives, paying into a government pension that has been massively reduced by 65% under the last Labour government and has an additional state pension of £11,542 when she can eventually retire at age 67 (I will be 70)!! Today's society want everything given to them on a plate today and don't want to save and work hard for anything - your post reads like you may be sat in one of those seats pointless! Lastly, I would also like to point out that some of us had to hold down three jobs when interest rates were more than double what they are now in the 1980's!! Rant over but perhaps a better thought through argument from you next time!!

The law of supply and demand, which all business follow, says if their is a shortage to increase price to a level the customer will pay, if the there is a surplus prices will fall to a level that the supplier will not make a big loss.

To be honest if you’ve looked after your money and been shrewd your definitely entitled to a state pension provided you’ve paid in,so if you spunked all your money and got nothing in the bank why should you be more entitled to a pension.Means testing shouldn’t happen.

What a stupid idea to think a 30plus year contract I had with the gov, paying my NI, tax and saved prudently, my reward is for the them to rescind my pension contract?! However, if I spent all the money I earned, I would be rewarded with the pension. Yes there are a lot of needy people and they should be helped but equally there are also a lot of people living above their means all their lives (not saving any money even though they could), labour government are choosing to reward them.

Anyone can return or pay money to the government. Just a simple process to set it up via HMRC. Just because you have to pay 20% or 40% tax doesn’t mean you can’t offer to pay 50% tax if you choose to. Despite all the hand wringing on telly etc. about public services and housing you can guarantee not one of the bleeding hearts is paying a penny more tax than they have to.

Take away from pensioners who have worked and payed in all their lives. And give to people who have not put money in and only been here five minutes. What’s the point of working hard and saving for old age, if it’s just gonna be stolen off you

When I was young we were told work hard get a good pension tax free and your be ok in your old age and be able to live a comfortable live. What they didn’t tell us was we can change the law anytime and take your savings off you . So my advice to the young is spend in joy yourself and spong of the state when your old your be fought better of

A very interesting discussion with most posters firmly against Labour’s illogical and dangerous policy of implementing policies which will hurt many pensioners who do not live in big houses. I feel terribly sad for those who are struggling to survive on limited pensions with utility bills stating to astronomical levels. In addition, Council Tax increases seemingly out of control due to incompetent councils frittering away money leading to many declaring bankruptcy over the past two years. Now the Government has decided to alter the bands based on the current value of houses which means that Council Tax will increase sharply allowing councils to waste more money on idiotic schemes. Interestingly, Paddy makes some valid points, for a change, and many others including MST why Labour must not penalise the elderly. At the time of my retirement I elected to defer my State Pension for three years as I received 10% p.a. and with the triple lock my pension is in excess of £17k but a large chunk goes in tax. The strategy behind the raid on the elderly has nothing to do with the country’s debt burden it is purely robbing Peter to pay Paul who happens to be the Government pay masters, the Unions. Strange how quickly the rail and junior doctors strikes were resolved following Labour’s victory which, to me, suggest the strikes were politically motivated. However, the greedy rail unions have already decided to come back for more. Next we will see a wealth tax which will affect those who own their own houses whilst those with real wealth will follow Charlie Mullins and move to a friendly tax country with Eire and certain European countries quite happy to welcome tax exiles. Looks like we are all in for a rough time as the Conservative Party needs a radical overhaul which will take years as they do not realise the damage the have done to their cause by their cavalier approach during their last term in office and with no prospective leader in sight. They have lost the public trust which will take a decade to repair and the removal of the tired top echelon which needs to be replaced by a younger group who are actually in touch with the man in the street. In the meantime, Starmer, Reeves and Rayner will wreck havoc with the economy which may well result with a run on the £ driving up inflation. Whilst I have lived my life I fear for my children and grandchildren.

Get yourself some bullion and leave them that, bigboy. None of the nasty taxes to bother HMRC with then. Just leave a sealed letter with a solicitor and tell them where where your safe deposit is. Better still, bury some of it and they can go on a treasure hunt.

Agree the Conservative Party need an immediate overall and i am not sure the public will buy into any of the next potential candidates for leadership to tell you the truth. They have behaved shamefully and badly starting with the Boris lies, the Matt Handcock affair etc etc and we could write a book on how to use Trussenomics and so on. Saying all that, these are unusual times and only a wise man will see and come through the mist. If only we didn't have the biggest pandemic in a hundred years which cost us millions and leading into billions after all the costs. If only not for the war in Ukraine, Ukrainian refugees, 22 thousand rescued Afghans from the Taliban and i could go on. Flip and Government around and would they fair any better in dealing with a load of this? How is Labour and Mr flip-flop doing so far? He gives a big pay rise to train drivers already on 60-70 grand a year etc, why not reward our over-worked NHS staff before the train staff etc? Something just doesn't sit right with this Labour Government who really have dodged a bullet, how would they have coped or make decisions on who gets what money and how much etc? No point going on and on but if only i could make a ringtone saying over and over again? 14 years of Conservative rule and this is the worst it's ever been, really?
