I am really tired on all the talk of players taking a salary cut to help the current situation. We've lost the plot! Let's be absolutely clear. Southgate, Neville, premier league players taking a 30% salary cut for a few months DO NOT Help anybody except the wealthy organisations/individuals they work for!! We should ask the club to redistribute part of their salaries to good causes and the premier clubs or FA should not take money from government. STOP requesting pay cut but clubs to redirect some player salaries to help fight Coronavirus.
Replies
John you miss the point. The reason for the wage cut is to help the non-playing staff of each Club to survive having been laid off (or, furloughed). Makes my blood boil that these over paid noncies like Jordan Henderson (who are objecting to this measure) are sitting on their backsides during this lockdown doing sweet FA (no training, no playing - nothing) and in the meantime are still pulling in 50, 60 70 (and more grand) a week. A complete disgrace if you ask me.

Think johns nearer the mark than you Marbella if all the prem footballers took a wage cut it would cost the country 200 mill in taxes based on there salaries not my reckoning but from people who know problem is for them to take full amount and sort out what to do after there paid as for the likes of spurs and scousers need to be ashamed of themselves you’ve been out in the sun to long!!!
posted by Len (Guest) - Monday 06th April 2020, 5:40 PM

What has being a football fan got to do with it? The 30% cut needs to be redistributed to non playing staff on furlough to stop us tax payers bailing out incredibly affluent clubs. Any left over after that should be sent down the football pyramid & good causes. Someone earning £100k per week dropping to £70k per week is hardly a hardship!

Also, if the government are not paying the 80% of those who have been furloughed surely that would be a tax saving?

What football players aren’t overpaid ?
posted by Sw6 (Guest) - Monday 06th April 2020, 5:56 PM

My point is quite simple. Premier clubs should absorb the cost of keeping non-playing staff on full or 80% pay! We want players and managers to contribute at least 20% (ie they are being paid no more than 80% of their salary for doing nothing) of their salary (after tax) to fight corona virus. Premier league and FA Organisation likewise should absorb furlough pay and senior executives If they are doing nothing contribute at least 20% of their salary. That’s all we want. Not salary cut that would only benefit the rich clubs (just think premier league clubs just need to buy one less player would be able find all this!).

Len re. your point about the Treasury losing 200 mill. You have to offset that against the many 000's employed directly or indirectly with football clubs across in the UK and who have been laid off during this crisis. They are therefore not paying income tax ....because they are not working. And, if they are not working they don't buy things and if the don't buy things the treasury gets no VAT. My other point stands in that if those over paid prima donnas who get paid God knows how much a week can't take a pay cut then it shows them up to be the selfish greedy bastards that they truly are. I mean who wouldn't struggle on 30/40/50k a week?
posted by Marbella White 1 - Monday 06th April 2020, 7:05 PM

The point is football like so many other businesses has a very difficult few months ahead, footballers like all other big earners have financial commitments Weather it’s on mortgages, other business investments they probably couldn’t afford a drop in wages if they had too. It’s a wake up call to everyone, retail is finished, pubs, restaurants any business to do with travel cabs etc is gonna struggle nobody knows what’s ahead. How many people won’t be able to afford season ticket renewals?

True but with every thing shut down you don’t need much cash only for food hopefully they are getting that would you like players to take wage cut and clubs taking the remainder ie directors ideal thing take your wages in full sort out your own arrangements ( in a perfect world )

Excuse me MST for using a new title taking up your suggestion on ideas for the this /next season as i think we have to add tv to the equation. To finish this seasons 10 games I see 2 possibities.a)They can be played.Squeezed into a new 2 weeks for preseason plus 5 weeks with 2 games per week. No play offs.3rd place directly up in all leagues. No friendly internationals ,champions and europa league compressed to 6 non stop weeks .At best even with closed doors wouldnt restart until june and this system requires 7-8 weeks hence at best would finish end july and 20-21 season start sept as clubs have to reorganise the new season.b) season declared finished as it is. The most diplomatic decision I fear the FA would opt for is only top 2 promote as they would consider it extremely harsh to penalise 3rd from bottom and not so hard not to promote FFC or others in same position. Sorting out season 20-21 is probably simpler. Same matches. No brakes. No friendly internationals, maybe 2-3 matches just before the euros.Champions league and europa league(uefa cup) back to tradional systems of only knockout. Less participants per league and away with all the rubbish from turthestan, hamaland and boggleland ,etc etc .These suggestions would not be ideal for the TVs but they now have it served on a plate to get football back to more humane modeand serve a higher quality( create lower leagues for minnoes).Lower player wages, reduce viewing prices ,bring back match times to sensible hours and finally to realise that there could always not be football.

It looks very unlikely that this season will resume and even more unlikely that some people's suggestions that Liverpool will be handed the PL title or top two clubs in each league get promoted and bottom two either stay up or get relegated so what's the solution?

An extended season from August incorperating the remainder of this season with no European or domestic cup competitions perhaps?

Maybe even a shortened season in 2020/21 that only finishes this season off and then play a pletherer of International games so that ensures players are match fit and team gelled for the world cup in November 2022? That would certainly make the competition more attractive to some.

I just wondered if there are any creative ideas out there that might actually work and don't necessarily only benefit FFC ;0).

I have said it many times. We want to avoid screwing up both seasons - that'd be really bad! Given there is no certainty next season can start in August and the only certainty we have (hopefully), we have sufficient time between now and May 2021 to finish the current season. I think league should commit to that! whether that's August, October, Feb etc, depending when it can finish, adjust next season accordingly with the priority on the league and drop all other competitions if necessary. If there still isn't sufficient time - maybe play the league with only one game between teams.

Realistically football will not start until November at the earliest. If that is the case the current season has to be expunged, it is already seriously compromised. The new season will start in November and will already be on a tight timetable to finish by May for the Euros to start in June. European competition will have to cease for two seasons.

OK how about this. The season ends now and finishing places are decided by awarding points for each game played. Points would be awarded according to the outcome of the games played (obvs) but allowing for a difficulty coefficient so a win away against West Brom would count for more than a home win against say Barnsley (OK, maybe not them). The difficulty coefficient could be calculated by the league position of the opposition at the end of March with allowances for home and away. I’ll let the mathematicians work out how this can be calibrated. I figure this would even out the positions and allow for games in hand and the fact that we were just coming into a series of very difficult fixtures after a relatively easy February (OK – I know about Barnsley). Far from perfect I know so I would like to hear any other suggestions

As I said this season is already seriously compromised...any mathematical points equation formula would be hypothetical and ridiculous and would make it even more compromised. The fairest and best way forward to give everyone as much time to get over this horrid time is to expunge the current season and start the new season in November. All European competitions should be cancelled for two seasons and resumed in September 2021. This gives the world time to recover as best as possible and gives teams a clear route. That said, even this timetable might be optimistic in light of the fall out across the world from this.

I’m beginning to think the best way to proceed is to allow another 12 months to finish this season. That way it can slowly be completed with the relaxing and tightening of lock down rules. The big issue being players who want to leave etc meaning once again, the conclusion would be unfair. Jokas revenge raises a good point about European football - it should be ruled out for the foreseeable future to keep the virus contained.

Having just revisited the board I see that Owen has made a welcome return. Your absence gave rise for concern snd many posters were seriously concerned. If I may ask, without upsetting the exile in America, if you have been under the weather. Very good having you back but, no doubt, some will complain about your excellent posts in the near future. Like MST I spent many years in the City and met several Public School educated people and, in general, they were no better or worse than anyone else. Our Chairman was Lord Poole and was one of the nicest people you could ever meet. Every day he would mingle with the workers and always lunched in the canteen sitting at a different table every day indulging in banter, listening to complaints and suggestions. He was a true gentleman. Finally, on the question of players spitting I believe it is a relatively new phenomenon as I cannot remember players doing it in the forties or fifties and Sunday teams never did when I played. Most of us kept handkerchiefs In our pockets. Now days players spit before the game starts. I believe it is a habit rather than anything to do with clearing the lungs.

Thanks, Bigboy all is well with me. I am well down on my lyrical content on here these days because i don't have a long and distinguished history around Fulham just like you guys. I admit that i have been truly found out in these difficult times. I only really started supporting Fulham around the Stead Malbranque and Saha era sorry! I truly love Fulham but i don't have the content that you guys do in these times of need with stories to tell etc. I wanted to come clean about this a while ago and now i feel i should be honest. I do feel a bit of a fake about this and i know that some on here got the impression that i was a long time supporter. I expect to get some stick for this but i needed to be honest. I try to keep it topical in the areas that i know or anything that might be of interest or even comical. I don't always pull it off and sometimes i get it wrong. I like to be a little bit different and i like to spin it from other angles which sometimes work or sometimes not. Thats me in a nutshell really...

Thanks, guy's' i like both Tigana and Slavisa era's. Slavisa was stubborn, he wouldn't change any little detail, especially around defense. He needed an Hector early on in our quest to stay in top division and maybe a Kante which Leicester had but couldn't keep. I am not too sure that even Tigana would have survived the onslaught of these teams now like Man City etc. Scott Parker is the beneficiary amongst this virus situation and Fulham are nailed on to give him another season without knowing if we would have been promoted or not. There is more burning fire in people who want to prove themselves right and Slavisa needs another chance but he probably won't get it. A Slavisa team was more polished in the finishing area back in the Championships. Scott Parker will have his time to show improvement yet, so anything is possible...

This argument is getting way too petty when professional sports bodies are counting who and who has got sports sponsorship and how many. We might as well tell Ronaldo to chip in a million or 2 more than Harry Kane and so on. This argument is getting more ridiculous! Let each one decide how much and where they want to donate too...

Exercise outside the home could be banned if people ignore coronavirus social distancing rules, the health secretary has warned. Matt Hancock told the BBC's Andrew Marr that the government would "take action" if further measures are needed to bring the coronavirus under control. It comes after reports of groups of people gathering in parks during sunny weather this weekend. The death toll in the UK reached 4,313 on Saturday. Mr Hancock said: "If you don't want us to have to take the step to ban exercise of all forms outside of your own home, then you've got to follow the rules." The health secretary said the vast majority were sticking to the guidelines, adding: "Let's not have a minority spoil it for everybody."

Geezer' you ain't gonna win this one mate, so quit while you are ahead. Just follow the basic rules mate. I will say one thing concerning Geezer and his job situation' working on the bins require team work to clear our streets. In a bin wagon it isn't possible to work more than so many metres apart especially while travelling. Unfortunately, there is always a great danger that Geezer and collegues will cross-contaminate each other through this virus yet. Geezer might be fortunate and not come down with the most severe symptoms associated with the Coronavirus, but he still needs to be careful around people and family. Around where i live there are overflowing bins in certain areas because some people 'still' cross-contaminate their own waste which is a huge headache for the Council authorities. Sweden has taken another approach to the virus and up till now they have chosen to carry on with local services which keep people in jobs. They are 2 weeks behind us by the way folks which means they may well need to take more drastic measures. I think they have 300 odd deaths from corona so far. Can you imagine our bins not being emptied for weeks and months on end because all bin-men decide to take up the Governments advice to isolate? Remember the bubonic plague back in the early centuries? Rats roaming the streets and so on. We would have the bubonic plague on top of us and to name a few more nasty biblical pestillence could spring it's ugly head. Guy's, i hope our country doesn't go into meltdown completely, but we all know that people in jobs like nurses docters, bin-men, and even some delivery food services need to carry on working. Even somebody delivering food runs the risk that the virus could sneak by to whoever is eating it and so on. Sweden are saying that they are following our original plan before our drastic lock-down, and we don't really know who is right or wrong with this one. The fact still remains, we must air on the side of caution, and and that is to obey government guidelines on our side of the pond. 'Sorry Geezer' you ain't gonna win this argument! COME ON YE FULHAM!!! WHERE IS JOCANOVIC!!! IS HE HERE YET???

Being told to “Obey government guidelines” and “just do what you are told” several times regarding edicts from incompetent governments who have allowed this virus to explode on both our shores, with nary a testing kit in sight is shocking frankly. And then someone questions said edicts, and then he gets vilified? Everyone needs to step back and redirect their vitriol to the CCP on down to western governments who have failed us at every level and allowed this to get out of control. When will they be held accountable? Why is the guy who sneaks into the market the p@#&k but those responsible are absolved. Can’t be sure of which argument Geezer is making, but if it’s the one I think he’s making, Owen, he won it a long time ago. Someone above even complimented China’s handling of the virus. Absolutely appalling. To all those that go out and risk your health providing important services, doctors, nurses, fire, police, garbagemen and everyone I have missed, THANK YOU!!!!

So the solution is for no one to follow any sort of plan and we all do what we want? It’s clear that in order to slow the spread of any virus, that we should avoid unnecessary contact. Until there is a better plan we all need to do our bit.

Your point taken. However, joining your wife on a food run hardly constitutes idiotic behavior. Far from it. Especially in the context of “just do as your told” advice from the true purveyors of idiocy, government and the elite. The difference in our arguments, and I’m definitely not arguing with the merits of yours, is that while everyone obsesses with issues related to one’s mortality, which is fine, there are several issues related to this pandemic, governmental,societal,geo-political,economical, etc., that seem to be completely ignored or not the least bit questioned. Don’t question!Just “obey” or “just do what your told”. Stuff that makes it onto banners in North Korea and China. Don’t let it happen here.

I expect this last season played to be VOIDED and a new season start again in August, maybe behind closed doors. Many clubs will be keen to offload players whose wages are too expensive and have prove a disappointment and some low league clubs will have to sell their best players to survive. Fulham as far as I can see it, is in a very good position to benefit, if we can move on some of those players that our Directors bought in our last season in the Premiership over and above the then Manager SJ's head. Really a stupid move. But didn't Watford FC know something because I still think SJ was pretty naive with his approach to the Premiership. Sorry.
Replies
I thought SJ left Watford because the contract he was offered was lower than any other club in the Premier league. If clubs want to sell players that they have given high wage contracts, they need to find clubs that are willing to pay at least the the same wages. Not easy with players who are not considered good enough for their own clubs.

You have a really good point RoC. We may be in a good position to poach a few at bargain prices from struggling clubs. The key, if the season is voided, is getting an added year for FFP reporting. Otherwise it might be our guys getting poached at bargain prices.

It's because of people, that don't take the warnings seriously that your death toll is rising. Here in Spain, if two people are in a car, the Police will always stop them. If they say they are going to shop, they will be told to go home. Only one allowed. If they both return it is a 600 euro fine. Only taxi's are allowed two people. The driver and one passenger. If two want a taxi, they have to order two cars. We have had over 900 deaths in the last couple of days. We are not allowed out to exercise outside our own house, or garden if we have one. Even with all these restrictions, our death toll is still rising, but people reporting catching the virus is gradually reducing slowly. I am sure that the strict restrictions, although not pleasant are working.

You don't need to be a scientist to know that the basic principles of transmission of this virus are no different to the ones we already know about. The virus is passed either through direct contact i.e. droplets passed to you by somebody sneezing or coughing, or by touching an infected surface then infecting yourself by touching your mouth, eyes etc. If it is not passed from one person to another through the aforementioned, then how do you think it is finding its way around the world at such an alarming rate?

I doubt football will be allowed to be played before June or later. As such if they want next season to start in August/September, there will not be enough time. So we have two options. Putting the legal aside, cut short next season and finish this season. Or we only promote clubs. Three teams from championship to premier and likewise all the way down to league two. We promote the top three teams. Next season we will have six teams demoted and three teams move up. This is probably the fairest of all. Yes, forest and Brentford will not be happy but they would have a bigger chance (no big clubs) of getting promoted next season than this. If you would them, would you not take this trade?

Personally give scousers the league promote and relegate top three up bottom three down all the way through league Or failing that to keep prem darlings happy two up. Maybey three. If two not to fussed we will walk that league next year and celebrate opening of stand Could work in little bees favour could see them finishing second ( obvious, no relegation from prem this year

Hard to believe that SIR(!) Philip Greene, a billionaire who lives abroad to avoid paying UK taxes, who contrived an ownership model for his business to avoid paying UK taxes, who still has to sort out the BHS pension despite having promised to about 4 years ago, who bought himself a SECOND yacht for over £100mln, is asking the UK taxpayer to help paying his staff. I know there have been some dodgy knighthoods in the past but how he’s still got one is an absolute disgrace!

I don’t want to defend Green but he’s an easy target to pick on. You could make the same argument for many many small and medium sized privately owned businesses with relatively wealthy owners. If we were to ask Phillip Green 2 months salary for his 14,000 employees that would cost around 70m or roughly 2% of his wealth. Now let’s think of a medium sized business with say 100 employees. The total salary for 2 months would be 50k. So if the owner has a net worth of £2.5m we should as him to not claim the furlough from the government. I am guessing most owners With a company of 100 people can also afford (Our of their own pocket) to pay for their employees. As I said I am not trying to defend Phillip Green but sometimes it’s easy to pick on an easy target.

So we are under a partial lockdown. If only we had a full lockdown straight away for 3/4 weeks. Things could have been different. The lockdown was inevitable but yet I'm still working and loads of people still are. I've seen people cutting bushes, going to painting jobs, putting up scaffolding like that's a necessity. Something about the whole thing is fishy as someone with half a brain would have realised. The herd immunity strategy would have never have worked and after that they leave us in a partial lockdown. There killing the economy anyway it would have been better to shut everything everyone stay at home and in 3/4 weeks slowly start opening again. A virus needs a host to survive it is not the same as bacterial infections. We are a small island if we killed it off here it would be gone then screen everyone coming in or out once we re opened our boarders. But none of that's been done and were left with over 500 deaths a day keep that up and there will be a problem. Our boarders are still open people flying in daily. It's sad but our governments response is even sadder

Theoretically if every individual in UK (the world for that matter) stay in isolation for 14days, the virus will be dead and those who’s got the virus already are treated or dead, the problem would go completely away in 2 weeks!! Easy! But that’s never possible, so the next best thing to do is how we can get as close to this as possible. since we are doing that we have to think about essential, economy and the indirect impact a total lockdown would cause. We will never know but the cost (health, human life and money) of a 2month semi-lockdown will be immense! How many more people will be depressed. How much hardship this will cause. Etc etc. You get the point?

And Most I didn't mean everyone. I meant keep the sessential running hospitals and police etc but I don't see my job as essential I go to work every day still 6 days a week to 'fix' the railways. Now as insider into this industry they have only just started to disinfect trains just now! Also I see people getting off the trains of an evening. People coming back from doing construction, going into factories, warehouses. No doctors or police men. I mean how essential is it that we keep a line open from Gatwick to London or Gatwick to reading ? I'm sure all the health care workers are driving or getting paid for cabs. So it just doesn't make any sense. I've seen people in groups coming back from house parties etc so it really isn't working this partial lockdown. And people still have to work a supermarket shift, etc and those that are working because our governments schemes are really not up to scratch. How about like I suggested before freeze all rent, bills etc keep everyone except essential workers in. We don't need trains really maybe. Afew in London and have them policed so only health care workers etc can get on them then this way it significantly stops the spread. But when you have a government who say only go to work if you can't work from home. Then how many people are out every single day? Spreading or catching and passing on this virus? It does beggar belief. And if you don't see it like this fare enough. But this partial lockdown will not work. It's all or nothing. Might aswell of kept everyone going out and everything open if they plan on doing it like they are

Ok Ken here goes. There is no lock down in Sweden. There is advice about staying a metre from the next person and no gatherings of more than 50 people but that’s it. Compare that with Austria; a country of similar population (c8m) and square miles. Both had their first recorded case of C19 in the same week yet Austria has three times as many deaths and four times as many contractions as there are in Sweden. I’m not advocating one course of action or the other but make your own mind up as to which country has it right....

Ok....here goes my perspective from downunder where the trend seems to be flattening. We have had a partial lockdown except for essential services for about two weeks. Social distancing of 1.5 metres and no one allowed to gather in more than 2 and social distance in force and now being enforced by police. People are not even allowed to sit on park benches. Most of our cases appear to have been caused by allowing a cruise ship to disembark people with covid who then travelled home and caused many community infections. Most other have come from os but people for the last month have had to self isolate for two weeks. I also wonder that if we and uk etc had gone into complete lockdown immediately for two weeks would it have stopped the spread. Yes the economy would be in trouble but we would perhaps have stopped it and all got back to normal quicker which would have helped the economy. However I am no expert but just want to send my best wishes to all over there and truly hope that you can get it under control as the numbers coming from there are frightening and I believe you need stronger measures like us but then again it’s maybe too late so it may just run its course and many more will die. So stay indoors for two weeks keep 1.5 metres from everyone and stay safe and well.

Share your sentiments Oz. Hope everyone stays safe in England and hope everyone is safe where you are and around the world. We appear to be a couple weeks away from our spike starting yet if the models are correct for the left coast. As for the partial lockdown strategy, it would appear it’s primarily based on keeping the hospitals from being overwhelmed and not much else. As for the virus vs. the economy, these half measures won’t help either sadly, but just prolong the misery.

Read the lead article in the Times today, the lockdown has been a massive mistake. It can’t last as the Govt can’t afford it and it’s destroying economic life for the 99% who ride this out. When it ends the virus will be there, there is no vaccine and herd immunity is the solution. If Oxford uni is right 50% of the population are already immune.

@MST I know you got the countries mixed up but you still got it wrong either way as SWEDEN has the more deaths which we have now agreed but your argument was about not being on lockdown yet SWEDEN are not on lockdown and have the more deaths than Austria who are. I know you alluded to having it the wrong way round but then your argument would mean Austria not being on lockdown as they have less deaths compared to Sweden but that's not how it is I'm afraid.

Agree with oz up to a point thing is we are squased on an island things take time Daughter lives in Perth nearest city to Perth hours away they can control movement not many people want to drive god knows how many hours to next state not allowed anyway Think a lot of people in Perth have financial problems lots of expats and a government no so liberal as ours but they will solve crisis before us as I say far less people larger area of land

And just so your aware, Austria has more cases but considering where it is and the ski resorts that were hit it's understandable. They are also on the descend with cases and deaths where as Sweden has more deaths and keeps getting more deaths daily. Austria went into lockdown I believe march 16th that's a full week before us and none of this 'urge' us to stay in. Now I don't live over there or go over there but I'm sure they only had essential workers working or at least should have. They will be relaxing there restrictions way before us and they will have less deaths than Sweden now and in the long run!!

Housing estates more park cars and vans. Getting tight getting in to them esp reversing. What about your jobs.

As yet, no one is on furlough in the UK but my teams in the UK and Ireland are all working from home and video conferencing with customers, HQ and each other. We have enough to do for a month or so with general house keeping and on-line training but after that who knows.

We are trying to compensate with social selling and on-line orders but our sales figures have fallen off a cliff and are about 10% down on 2019.

HQ in Denmark has had to lay off a few hourly paid workers but our main priority has been to keep people safe so we have installed infrared cameras as well as employed doctors and nurses to regularly check temperatures and test suspected cases of the virus.

As yet only one person in our HQ has contracted the virus and that person caught it on holiday and did not come into work. They recovered after around six days but they are super fit and run marathons, triathlns, etc.

Worrying times!!

So Spurs want the government to pay the salary for roughly 550 non-playing staff. This equate to approximately £1.3m per month which is approximately the same salary that Mourinho is drawing! There is so much money in the premier league that it is shameful they need tax payers help for their non-playing staff, generally represent a few weeks Salary of their highest paid player!

I used to work in the liquor trade, it’s weekly journal was Off Licence News. One particular issue, published on April 1st, included these spoofs sent in by marketing departments to establish whose “editorial” would fool the most readers - Jacobs Creek announced the launch of a blue wine - Guinness claimed a new technology whereby the head would settle at the bottom of the glass - Pimms in a can came with ice cubes. The spoofs were so well constructed and illustrated with pack shots, they fooled a lot of trade people, some of whom should have known better!

It has been suggested that Fulham enlist the skills of someone like Ashley Cole, Brede Haageland,Tony Gale or Tony Adams yo work with out defence. Having lost Ryan Sessegon to Spurs there is now a need to get some experience into the defenders we have left as it is that area that has been suspect this season. Agree? Will Daniel Levy pay Ryan Sessegon is far better wages at Spurs or are they all going to have to bit the bullet?

Spurs, owned by a man reported to be worth over £4bn, are cutting non playing staff wages by 20%. The Premier League, Football League and PFA holding talks on wage cuts but PFA reported to feel no action is needed. Juventus manager and players agree not to take a pay rise for 4 months!! On the other side, Barcelona players take a 70% pay cut and make additional contributions to ensure non playing staff get their full wages.

Whilst most fans and the wider country is furloughed or on reduced wages surely now is the time for the PFA and the players to voluntarily take a cut (not a deferment) otherwise I can see many clubs getting into serious financial trouble or going bust.

I certainly understand the feelings but I think that there is an alternative view that we all earn as much as we can in whatever profession and if top flight football wasn't such a worldwide pull from people like us then TV companies would be less interested and clubs, players and agents would earn less.

You also have to remember that we all live to (or above) our menas and I doubt that would be any different for footballers to be honest. If you can afford it then take the cut to help others but if you can't and you have a family (however extended)to support then perhaps it's not possible.

In addition, many pepople make charitable donations without shouting about it so calling someone out without full knowledge of their situation is never a good idea.

Just trying to add some balance ;0)

Apparently the Juventus players have agreed not to have a pay increase for four months. How good of them.! As far as I'm concerned all these players " earning" silly money need to start living in the real world. This includes the likes of " celebrity's". the "Linikers" of this world. Perhaps it's you who are missing the point. Just imagine that if the clubs didn't have such a massive wage bill they just might be able to reduce the cost of watching football.
posted by John (Guest) - Wednesday 01st April 2020, 4:31 PM

John, they could do that anyway. Gate receipts in the top two divisions would not cover 10% of players wages and where do you think the money would go if the players didn't get it? Agents? Clubs?

Whichever way you look at it, the money will find it's way back to the players and the only way to stop it, in my opinion, is higher taxation to players, agents and clubs. +75% perhaps, like it was in the '60s and 70's however, if we did that players would simmply go overseas as tax exiles (like pop stars used to), our Premier League would end up like the Scottish Premiership and the lower leagues would collapse.

Just my opinion. It's good to discuss it of course but in real life, when it comes to salary, it's every man for hiimself, regardless of the industry in which we find ourselves and the better we are at our jobs, (usually) the better we are paid...

Yes mate enjoy the exchanges, quite rightly people have different views on what is a prickly subject- but I will NEVER consider a guy like Ozil to be worth over 300k a week. No wonder he's " happy" to stay at Arsenal, what other club would be daft enough to offer him that sort of money? Whilst I understand that gate receipts are small at the lower leagues, the premier league grounds are usually full so I'm sure having to pay their players less could leave room for the Folk who support them through thick and thin to a reduction in the price of admission. Probably done this debate to death- wonder what will be the next topic we can get our teeth into ?

MST - I think you are missing the point and you are wrong. If you read my original post you will see that it is not happening. In fact, clubs are now using the government wage support scheme which is really taking the piss.

Ventured out this morning for a food top-up. Shelves mostly full except for the tinned section which was still understandably short in stock. Anyhow, in amongst the stuff that nobody wanted was a tin of Westlers Hamburgers. Anybody else remember the carts that used to line up the Stevenage Rd on a match day selling these culinary delights, or were you saving your appetites for a bag of monkey nuts in the Hammersmith End. Ah, those were the days

I remember the smell more than anything and the fact that cooked burgers were still pink!!! What I miss more than anything coming in off the M4 these days is that evocative smell as you walked through Bishop's Park - Hmmm Westlers, stale booze and fags. Who needs fresh air LOL.

On the shopping note I read today that someone in North Wales was fined £30 for buying non-essential items and a corner shop was ordered to take Easter eggs off the shelf - clearly with the decline in shoplifting, speeding and burglaries the police don't have enough to do :0((((

What on earth is this country coming to and how can you you take away someone's freedom of choice in a free society - sad days indeed....

Has anyone seen anything about footballers and still being paid full wages? I’ve seen about Birmingham players earning over £6k a week delaying 50% for 4 months, but still getting it in due course. I’m sure some lower league teams are using the 80% scheme (eg I’ve seen that Forest Green are). There’s an opportunity for overpaid footballers to forego a big chunk of wages (not just delay) and to donate to charities or the NHS etc. This would help clubs (many of whom I can see going bust) and to show that the players are in touch with the real world. I also would like to see the PFA leading this.

One idea being suggested is that all the clubs refuse to sell any of their players to other English clubs. This would hopefully be the end of " stupid " money being paid out. If the Greedy sods can't settle on 100 k a week - this still seems a lot to me - let them join the M Mouse leagues in China ( masks provided). REALY do hope some sense of reality emerges from all this.

The bets must surely be off, for seeing any live football, at least until October, following today’s latest Government update. Stadium events have to be last in line for reopening, as lockdowns are gradually withdrawn. Whilst devastating on so many levels, our club should be in a much better position by then, to make progress

Think this seasons over/void probably, tough on Leeds,West Brom Result for Norwich,Watford. We lose any hope of playing in the premier next season although nothing to fear in this league.

As each day goes by the thoughts of football are slowly slipping from the mind, as other things are now much more important. When I heard on the TV last night that this could continue up until September, or even later, and I have a terrible feeling that this seasons tables will be scrubbed out, and if and when the next season starts, we will have to start all over again. Keep as safe as you can everybody.

Netflix is for sure worth getting - excellent content. Best thing to do is to get a free trial

I think that Netflix is far better value than Sky to be honest (although I have both). Just finished watching “the English game”, a Netflix original series. Dramatised the story of the beautiful game moving from the upper to the working classes. Really worth a watch. On a separate note John, I have paused Sky Sports but still have the channels working.

Netflix is great. Better than amazon prime tele in my opinion. But if football is what you want, prime have all the good football documentaries. And will be getting the spurs one.

Also on more four. Just watching before i die . And BBC FOUR Swedish Noir. The swedes make the best police programmes by far. Along with Norway Finland Denmark. The French Belgium Icelandic also. They all have sub titles. They all make our programmers with a lot to learn and do to catch up. They are very professional and you the viewer have to use you brains to work the plots out.

Just to add, that if you get the top package (about £13 per month), then you get UHD content and four log ins so other people in your family can also view Netflix on your account in different parts of the country. As long as no more than four poeple try to log in at one time, it works fine - my three sons all use my account at different addresses. How good is that for £13 per months ;0)?

How about football doing away with Agents. Thery are leeches, take millions from the game and give nothing back. Let the clubs and players sort out financial terms. For sure there wouldn't be the.Obscene wages of three hundred thousand plus a week being awarded. And maybe the supporters could pay a bit less to watch their teams play. Rant over

We are not talking about playing on the cheap, but need a bit of common sense here. You know like NOT giving Mesut Ozil 300 grand a week, this guy only plays when he feels up to it , then gets the hump when he's taken of after being anonymous for most of the game. Or David - de hay. Not being able to live on about 12 million a year threatens to leave so they up his money by a few more grand. Still seen him let a couple of shots dribble through his legs into the net. This madness has to end !

I have a solution. Clubs look after players outside of football. They pay 30% of wages into a pension. Players have a support service to help with housing, schools etc. That is where agents get in. I know one and he even orders the shopping. Players have no worldly experience and need help, So cut the agents out. Clubs won’t do it as they make too money from agents.

Are my testicles black? A suspected Covid-19 male patient is lying in bed in the hospital, wearing an oxygen mask over his mouth and nose. A young student female nurse appears and gives him a partial sponge bath. "Nurse,"' he mumbles from behind the mask, "are my testicles black?" Embarrassed, the young nurse replies, "I don't know, Sir. I'm only here to wash your upper body and feet." He struggles to ask again, "Nurse, please check for me. Are my testicles black?" Concerned that he might elevate his blood pressure and heart rate from worrying about his testicles, she overcomes her embarrassment and pulls back the covers. She raises his gown, holds his manhood in one hand and his testicles gently in the other. She looks very closely and says, "There's nothing wrong with them, Sir. They look fine." The man slowly pulls off his oxygen mask, smiles at her, and says very slowly, "Thank you very much. That was wonderful. Now listen very, very, closely: "Are - my - test - results - back?"

Hopefully when this all over the days of the obscene amount that these players are payed will come to an end, surely the likes of Messi Bale and co could " survive" on half pay. Who knows the guy on the terrace may find its possible to watch his team for a more reasonable price !!

Personally I don't get too stressed about what other people earn - it doesn't bother me. Barcelona are owned by the state of Catelonia so I doubt they are short of a few quid either.

I'm more concerned about the future of my own family and those of my sales team if they cannot earn in these very worrying times.....
