Fulham extended our unbeaten run to four Premier League matches with a come-from-behind draw with Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon.

The boys were the better side in the first half but had no advantage to show for it, though Josh King will rue visiting goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek for keeping out his piledriver of a volley.

The Magpies improved after the break but the game looked set to heading for a goalless draw, until that final 10 minutes that was.

First, Jacob Murphy ruthlessly punished a turnover in possession with a beautiful strike from range, before Rodrigo Muniz provided the perfect response with a deft flick to restore parity.

Following the impressive showing at Villa Park the previous week, it was an unchanged XI back at Craven Cottage, though Ryan Sessegnon did return to the bench having served his ban, at the expense of Tom Cairney who was nursing a knock.

After 13 minutes of zero efforts on goal, Fulham went close twice within a matter of seconds, with Oscar Bobb’s placed shot pushed behind by Hornicek on the stretch, and Gonzalo García’s delicate header from the subsequent corner just kissing the bar on its way over.

Despite not showing much attacking intent, Newcastle must have thought they’d taken the lead in the 19th minute when Harvey Barnes ghosted behind the defence to flick Murphy’s cross goalwards, but Bernd Leno made a terrific reaction stop to deny him from close range.

Leno got the better of the Magpies winger again at their next duel when Barnes sprung the offside trap to go one-on-one. He then looked to place one into the far corner, but a big Leno head diverted it behind.

Newcastle did have the ball in the net from the resulting corner as Burn poked in, but the whistle had gone for a foul by Yoane Wissa in the build-up.

That was the visitors’ best spell of the game, but we responded with a stunning King volley that was beaten away by Hornicek. It was incredible technique from the England man – think Zinedine Zidane versus Bayer Leverkusen in the 2002 Champions League Final…

A brilliant King run into the box was then picked out by Iwobi in stoppage time, but he could only flick wide with his header.

There was an intensity to Newcastle’s play at the start of the second half, and Barnes will feel he should have done better when he smashed against the stanchion from 16 yards after being teed up by Wissa.

Fulham’s first attempt of the half soon followed when Berge lined one up from the edge of the D, drilling a low strike a matter of inches wide of the far post.

Berge was involved again when his drive into the box was unceremoniously ended by Burn, with Malick Thiaw then clattering the Fulham man for good measure, but no foul was given.

Some quick feet from substitute César Palacios following a one-two with Iwobi almost led to a shooting chance, only for Thiaw to nick it off his toes at the last minute. Hornicek then beat away Timothy Castagne’s header from the corner.

With 10 minutes to play, the away side broke the deadlock in style when Murphy lashed a stunning strike in from range, though it was all of our own making after a poor giveaway pass in the middle of the pitch.

The Fulham response, though, was impeccable. After winning possession high, the ball was worked to Shea Charles who played off to Palacios. His cross was blocked, but Muniz showed marvellous ingenuity to flick his shot between a raft of Geordie bodies and beyond Hornicek.

Both sides sensed the three points were there for the taking, and Lewis Hall must have thought he’d done just that when the ball dropped for him 10 yards out, but Leno made an unbelievable stop to deny him.

Hornicek did likewise in stoppage time when Sessegnon absolutely leathered a volley towards the postage stamp from 20 yards. It would have been a fabulous way to nick the win, but Hornicek flung himself across the width of the goal to repel it and earn his side a point.

Fulham boss Alvaro Arbeloa
"I felt the game was there for [Muniz]. They were marking us man-to-man, we had the space in front and they forced us to play long balls. Rodrigo is very strong in this situation.

"He scored a goal but they couldn't stop him without fouls. He's very important for us and for me."
