Fulham earned a first Premier League victory of the season with a dominant performance against Hull City on Saturday afternoon.

Spurred on by a vocal home crowd at the Cottage, the Whites started strongly and took a deserved lead into the break, through Alex Iwobi’s fine finish.

Gonzalo García thought he had made it two in the second half, but his header came back off the woodwork.

A late red card for Ryan Sessegnon was the only negative from the fixture, and the Academy graduate can probably feel hard done by to have been given his marching orders for a mistimed challenge.

Álvaro Arbeloa made two changes to the side that were beaten by Ipswich Town a week earlier. Both came in the full-back areas, with Kenny Tete and Sessegnon making way for Timothy Castagne and Antonee Robinson.

A confident start from Fulham saw Josh King combine well with Iwobi down the left, which culminated in the latter curling a shot towards goal, with a vital block diverting it onto the roof of the net.

For all our control of proceedings, chances weren’t overly forthcoming in the first quarter of the game, with Calvin Bassey directing the ball behind at a corner, and Oscar Bobb having a free-kick saved, as close as we got.

The boys continued about their task, though, and were duly rewarded in the 33th minute. After Hull were unable to clear their lines in the penalty area, Sander Berge was able to tee up Iwobi to whip one inside the near post for a deserved lead.

The Whites were motivated to double that lead going into the break, with Bassey heading over, Bobb’s shot blocked, and King denied by a good Konstantinos Tzolakis save, with the sole Hull response coming from Regan Slater who volleyed over two minutes before half-time.

After the restart, good pressing from Shea Charles saw him win possession high up the pitch, interchanging slickly with King who was again denied by a big Tzolakis boot.

Five minutes later, Fulham almost scored a classic Premier League goal. Castagne released King who gracefully spun his man, allowing him to dink a cross over to Gonzalo. His nod down teed up Iwobi, but the Nigerian’s shot was parried by Tzolakis.

With the ending to recent games still hurting, the boys knew the value a second goal would bring, and Gonzalo was desperately unlucky to see his header come back off the crossbar after meeting Iwobi’s tantalising delivery.

A first appearance of the season for Tom Cairney had been another major positive from the afternoon, and he almost sealed things in the final minute of stoppage time against his former club, but Tzolakis got down well to deny his low shot from the edge of the box.

The only blip arrived shortly after when fellow substitute Ryan Sessegnon accidentally caught the heel of Robinio Vaz, with Chris Kavanagh whipping out the red card. Thankfully, it was a decision which did not impact the result, as Fulham secured a big three points.hamreport
