Fulham got off the mark for the season with a richly deserved point at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
We had the better of the first half, with a Gonzalo García shot cleared off the line and Josh King penalty shout falling on deaf ears in the same passage, though we did need an unbelievable Bernd Leno save to keep out Victor Munoz’s header.
Both goalkeepers were called into action after the break and could not be beaten, with a draw probably the right result.
The clean sheet feels particularly important for the Whites and Álvaro Arbeloa, who becomes the first former Premier League Liverpool player to take a point off his former team as a coach.
Arbeloa made two changes to his XI for the trip, with David Affengruber handed a debut at centre-back at the expense of Joachim Andersen, while Sander Berge came in to partner Shea Charles in the middle of the park in a move that saw Alex Iwobi shifted to the left as César Palacios dropped to the bench.
After Alexander Isak and King exchanged shots wide, Fulham’s high press presented a glorious chance when Berge robbed Ryan Gravenberch in his own box.
It was worked to Gonzalo who took his time before having his shot cleared off the line by Jeremy Jacquet.
It looked as though we might get a second bite when replays showed King being wiped out by Alisson, but VAR saw nothing wrong with the challenge.

Liverpool threatened next through Munoz’s header that was kept out by a worldie Leno stop, but we would have felt very aggrieved had it gone in as it came from a corner that was won after a blatant offside slipped through the cracks.
King was looking as lively as ever, and after having a shot deflect over, he drew a save from Alisson with his low strike.
The Whites were playing with confidence, with Bobb next to make something happen, getting to the byline and clipping a right footed cross back to Antonee Robinson, who sent a flying header wide from some distance.
We had done a good job of containing Liverpool, though hearts were in mouths when Dominik Szoboszlai’s deep cross found Bradley Barcola at the far post, but Timothy Castagne made a terrific block to repel his volley.
Fulham began the second half with good momentum again, with Iwobi seeing a couple of shots blocked, but the hosts’ threat was teased when Isak’s dancing feet worked him a yard, only for Leno to get down well to his shot.
Kenny Tete was brought on for Bobb and his first touch earned his side another corner, from which Calvin Bassey headed straight at Alisson.
Both sides felt they could win it, and it was the Reds next to test the goalkeeper when Szoboszlai stung the palms of Leno.
With quarter of an hour to play, Fulham broke quickly and worked the ball inside to King, who bent a shot towards the top corner that required palming over by Alisson.
Kevin then lashed an arrow not too wide of the far post as we continued to take the game to our hosts.
Liverpool had much more of it in the closing stages, but save for an Isak header that whistled a yard wide, they didn’t trouble the Fulham goal, as we secured a well-earned first point of the season.

"I know that when you are not winning games, it's not so easy that your players believe in your ideas. I know everything is easy when you win but they believe in the way that we have been working and I showed them the things that we were doing so well.
"I think there were so many things that we did well but we have been making mistakes and of course, in this league, if you make mistakes, they will punish you. That's the league, that's the level and we need to understand that, how important it is.
"If you have chances, try to take those chances but also to be a little bit more balanced and control the transition against a team when all teams here in England have quick players. I think we did better and we realised how important it is to be balanced.
"From my first day, we trained so hard about the transition. But I think everything changed after the Crystal Palace game because I think we have been working all this week, but in the first week also, how important it is to be balanced when you have the ball."
