World Cup free on T.V.

last updated Thursday 18th October 2001, 6:04 PM
Phew! The 2002 World Cup finals in Japan and South Korea will be on T.V. after all. German TV giants Kirch, who had bought the global rights from FIFA for the World Cups in 2002 and 2006 for £2billion, were demanding £170m from ITV and BBC rather than the £55m they had been offered.

A deal was confirmed today that gives BBC and ITV exclusive live match and highlights rights to all 64 matches in South Korea and Japan next year and the same in Germany in five years' time and Kirch get £160m. Amazingly BBC and ITV paid only £5.4 m for the 1998 World Cup finals in France.

Most matches from South Korea and Japan will be screened live in the mornings.
