Watford warn Fulham not to get too cocky

last updated Friday 13th October 2000, 9:01 PM
Fulham's biggest rivals Watford are warning the Whites that they haven't given up hope of the First Division title.

Fulham may be running away with the league right now with nine wins from nine games, but the Hornets are only two points behind and star defender Neil Cox says Fulham should not get to confident.

He said: "Fulham may be top at the moment and storming away with it, but nobody should be worried about that. If Fulham think they can just stay top all season and run away with it, I've got news for them. I've played in this league a long time and it doesn't happen that way, not in this division."

"Sunderland ran away with it once and Bolton I think, but those were rarities. Most years the relentless number of games gets to people and when they are playing three games a week in December or February with their best players suspended or injured, things change very quickly."

He added: "If you just make one mistake you can find yourself losing three games in seven days and all of a sudden the pack is with you. It happened to me when I was at Middlesbrough. We were top and running away with it and suddenly everything got to us.

"If Fulham keep their best 14 players fit all season I'm sure they'll go up. But that is unlikely to happen and there will be a lot of tests to come for them. It's not just about us,either. I think there are six or seven teams who could put a run together and challenge - people like Birmingham, for instance. The title race definitely isn't over yet."
