Premier League newcomers Fulham and Newcastle United have both been linked with a move to sign Swansea City’s Spanish midfielder Roque Mesa.

The 29-year-old barely featured for Swansea in the first-half of their season and struggled to make a proper impact as he made just 11 appearances at SA1 – and was subsequently sent out on loan at Sevilla for the rest of the season, where he made seven appearances in the Spanish top flight.

In the loan contract it emerged that there was a buyout clause in the contract.

And according to Sevilla ABC, Newcastle and Fulham are both keen to sign the defensive midfield player but it is believed he would prefer a stay in Spain with Sevilla.

A move to Fulham would perhaps make more sense as he could link up with Slavisa Jokanovic, with the Cottagers boss sharing the same agent as Mesa.

Mesa started his career at Telde, but it was at Las Palmas in the Gran Canaries where his talent was first spotted as he made 126 appearances over the course of six years – he also chipped in with six goals as he helped them earn promotion during the 2015/2016 season from the Segunda B division in Spain.

It hasn’t really worked out for him in South Wales and a move back to Spain could make more sense.

Fellow La Liga outfit Villareal have also expressed their interest, but a move back to Sevilla on a permanent deal following a six-month loan at the Red and Whites looks like the most likely outcome at this stage.

It won’t be a big loss for the Swans to lose Mesa’s services, who failed to make an impact during the few months he spent at SA1, but the most frustrating thing for the supporters is the fact the club spent £11 million on the Spaniard last summer and he had penned down a four-year contract with the club at the time.
