Newcastle are confident Luis Boa Morte will become the club's third signing of the month within 48 hours after United officials opened talks with Fulham and the Portuguese international's representatives during the weekend.

The Magpies took the opportunity of Saturday's overnight stay in London to arrange a meeting to discuss the midfielder's future. And, far from being discouraged by Chris Coleman's suggestion on Friday that no deal would be sanctioned, it is understood the Newcastle delegation came away confident that a transfer could be concluded later this week.

Boa Morte is seen as pivotal to his Fulham's long-term plans by a manager determined to fend off an approach for one of his more saleable assets. But the former Arsenal winger has yet to agree a new deal with the Craven Cottage club and has set his heart on swapping south London for the North-East.

"There are things going on between my agent, Newcastle and Fulham," Boa Morte said yesterday after news of United's approach became clear. And although Coleman was unavailable for comment it appears that the Welshman is now resigned to the fact that the goalscoring playmaker will part company with the Cottagers sooner, rather than later.
