Primera outfit Levante are understood to have tabled an offer for Fulham goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.

The Spaniards have been busy scouring the European market for possible recruits during the transfer window.

It was thought a striker was their priority, with a host of names including Giovane Elber and Gerald Sibon having been linked with a switch to the Valencia-based club.

However, coach Bernd Schuster is keen to bring in another goalkeeper to contest the number one jersey with Juan Mora, and was alerted by the fact that van der Sar has still to sign his new contract at Fulham.

Given that the Dutchman will become a free agent at the end of the season, Levante are thought to have submitted a bid of around €1 million, but it has been rejected by The Cottagers.

Boss Chris Coleman has made it clear he wants to retain van der Sar, but - having recently secured the services of Czech Jaroslav Drobny for next season - the Londoners could be tempted to cash in on the former Ajax star if a suitable offer comes in.

Levante are not willing to top their opening bid for a player who has so little time left on his contract and talks between the two clubs have been broken off.

Fulham are still confident that van der Sar will commit himself to the club, but until he signs his new deal speculation on his future is sure to persist.
