LAWRIE SANCHEZ has a major rival in the battle to land the Fulham job on a permanent basis.

Sunday Mirror Sport can reveal the Premiership club's No.1 target remains Derby's Billy Davies.

Davies has had boardroom problems at Derby.

Fulham have long admired him and would have made an immediate move to secure his services following the sacking of Chris Coleman this week.

But with Derby facing a critical four-game programme to secure Premiership football and Davies expected to land a £500,000 bonus for his achievements, the move was put on hold and Northern Ireland boss Sanchez was drafted in as a temporary stop-gap.

Former Scotland coach Craig Brown, who acts as an adviser to Fulham chairman Mohamed Al Fayed, has a deep knowledge of Davies's ability because he brought him to Preston.

If Fulham land Davies, Sanchez could become a target for Manchester City.

He tops their list to replace Stuart Pearce, who is tipped to go full-time as England Under-21 manager.
