THE imminent arrival of Clint Dempsey's new baby has given Fulham a welcome leg-up in their bid to beat Manchester City on Sunday.

The USA forward would normally be fighting the fatigue of an international week and a 24-hour return trip from South Africa where his country played Wednesday.

But the native Texan has for the first time turned down an invitation to hear the Stars-and-Stripes at the beginning of a game so he can remain close to wife Bethany, who is expecting a new addition to daughter Elyse.

Like every other Premiership manager Mark Hughes always fingers the worry beads this morning when he counts the cost of a squad scattered around the globe.

But for once the Whites boss has been able to keep an eye on Dempsey as both plot to beat the current moneybags of the top flight.

Dempsey said: "It's been good to get the rest this week, for sure.

"I enjoy playing for my country, but it can be difficult getting on a plane for 12 hours for a few days and then 90 minutes of football before flying back.

"I haven't had that much of a rest in recent seasons. I also have a baby on the way so I didn't want to be too far away from my wife."

City have spent £126million in the summer in assembling a star-studded squad. But the more humble surrounds of Craven Cottage has done for more than a few pretenders to the Premiership throne - and Dempsey wants to add manager Roberto Mancini's scalp to the Whites' belt.

He said: "It will be a tough game, because they have a lot of good players.

"But we're at Craven Cottage, and at home you have to make sure that you take advantage of your opportunities. As I always say, the Cottage has always been good to us."
