Bjarne Goldbaek does a Beckham at the Cottage

He may lack the superstar wife and celebrity profile, but in footballing terms Fulham's Bjarne Goldbaek is the First Division's equivalent of David Beckham.

The Dane plays on the right side of midfield for the league leaders, and yet, as is famously the case with Beckham, there appears an element of frustration at the limitations of his position, a creative impulse within him just waiting to be released.

Goldbaek displayed these essential credentials in full as Fulham swept aside Gillingham 3-0 to record their eighth successive league victory this season under the expert guidance of manager Jean Tigana.

In the first half he diligently manned his post on the right as the resilient visitors worked hard to contain their hosts. After the break he moved in-field to telling effect, directing play with authority and freeing Lee Clark to move forward and create havoc in the 'hole' behind the front pair.

'Of course it is more fun in central midfield because you've got more contact with the ball,' he admitted afterwards. 'But on the other hand we have to play disciplined football and with some width as well.'

Goldbaek revealed that on this occasion his move was because he fancied a rest.

'Sometimes if we change positions it is more difficult for opponents to get rid of us when we attack,' he said. 'But today it just happened because Steve Finnan was really fit and running up and down all the time. I wasn't that fit in the second half.'
