Fulham have made an approach to sign Barnsley's goalscoring midfielder
Craig Hignett.
Fulham have been watching the 30-year-old's
progress
for a long time and once had a £400,000 bid turned down. But now
they are willing to offer more serious money and have asked Barnsley
to name their price.
The Oakwell club has replied by asking for £3m, a figure which
is way above Fulham's valuation. But the bartering process is
now under way and Fulham are determined to get their man.
They reasoning behind the approach is that Barnsley have lost
their parachute money from the Premiership, which only lasts for
two seasons. And that means they must cut down on wages next season
because there is not as much money coming in. The sale of Hignett
would certainly help matters and Fulham hope that will be enough
to persuade Dave Bassett to sell his star man.

Out of contract at Middlesbrough during the 1998 close season,
Craig spent a few months at Aberdeen before arriving at Barnsley
last November, and proving to be a bargain as he cropped up at
the right place and at the right time regularly to poach goals.
Showing that he could drift past defenders, and was very good
at linking up with the forwards, he was always a cool finisher
in front of goal, and will be one of the Tykes main hopes for
the coming season. Is also recognised for his powerful dead-ball
kicking.
