Shearer urges Magpies to forget defeat

Alan Shearer has urged his Newcastle United team-mates to forget about their weekend defeat to Bolton Wanderers and embark on another lengthy unbeaten run.

Sunday's reverse at The Reebok Stadium was Newcastle's first under the stewardship of Graeme Souness.

"The unbeaten run is gone now and there is nothing we can do about it," said former England captain Shearer. "It's disappointing, but we must start again now.

"This is when you see a team's true test of character - when they have lost."

Shearer feels Newcastle were sucked in to adopting Bolton's style of play.

"We played very narrow like Bolton did and really the first half was a bit of a non-event," added Shearer. "I would not assume that we will play that way every week, but we came here with a system and are disappointed it did not work."

Newcastle succumbed to an aerial bombardment from Bolton, looking in desperate need of a commanding presence at the back.

Souness would appear to realise he needs a replacement for the departed Jonathan Woodgate and is being linked with a move for Nottingham Forest stopper Michael Dawson.
