After a slow start to the season and the upset of Johnny Haynes' untimely death The Cottagers put in an all round determined performance with a Man of the Match effort by captain Luis Morte.

Even the defensive effort seemed to improve with an excellent performance by "Bonus" Warner who came on after an injury to Mark Crossley.

Chris Coleman should be able to relax a little, for a few days at least, as Fulham went up to 14th place, three points clear of the relegation zone. A similar performance away at Wigan next Saturday will see The Black and Whites take all three points and inch further up the table. Well done men.

Elsewhere referees were in the spotlight with Middlesbrough, West Brom and Fulham Broadway's managers claiming the men in black had cost them a result. Wigan and West Ham continued excellent starts to their Premiership campaigns but Birmingham, Aston Villa, Portsmouth and Sunderland continue to slide into the mire. The Individual match comments below come from the SportingLife.

Blackburn 2-0 Birmingham - (KO 12.45 - Saturday - 22 October 05)

Birmingham's troubles at the foot of the table deepened with a 2-0 defeat at Blackburn.

Arsenal 1-0 Man City - (KO 15.00 - Saturday - 22 October 05)

Arsenal beat Manchester City 1-0 but the talking point of the day was Robert Pires' arrogant attempt to pass a penalty to captain Thierry Henry which backfired spectacularly when he fluffed the attempt and referee Mike Riley overturned the award.

Arsenal went on to win 1-0 thanks to an earlier spot-kick from Pires in the 61st minute when David James fouled Henry but it could have been costly had Darius Vassell's header with 11 minutes remaining not been disallowed.

Fulham 2-0 Liverpool - (KO 15.00 - Saturday - 22 October 05)

Fulham pulled off a surprise at Craven Cottage with a 2-0 victory over Liverpool.

The visitors dominated possession without creating much and they were punished in the 30th minute when a lapse in defence saw Claus Jensen lift the ball over the backline and Collin John chested down and fired past Jose Reina.

Fulham lost goalkeeper Mark Crossley to injury on the hour but Cardiff's on-loan goalkeeper Tony Warner kept out his former club, producing good saves from Luis Garcia and Sami Hyypia. And Luis Boa-Morte finished things off by capitalising on a wide-open Liverpool defence by firing home left-footed in added time.

Man Utd 1-1 Tottenham- (KO 15.00 - Saturday - 22 October 05)

Tottenham and Manchester United who drew 1-1 at Old Trafford.

Manchester United scored their 999th Premier League goal in taking the lead against Tottenham but it came courtesy of a mistake from England goalkeeper Paul Robinson. The Red Devils, in third place, capitalised when Robinson fumbled Ruud van Nistelrooy's header from Paul Scholes' free-kick and Mikael Silvestre dived in to put United ahead.

However, Jermaine Jenas' 72nd-minute curling 20-yard free-kick proved good enough for a point.

Portsmouth 1-2 Charlton - (KO 17.15 - Saturday - 22 October 05)

Darren Ambrose and Dennis Rommedahl led a second-half fightback that took Charlton second by drilling home Danny Murphy passes to take all three points and leave Portsmouth manager Alain Perrin in anguish again at Fratton Park.

Dario Silva had put Pompey ahead in the 14th minute with his first goal for the club and they could have had more.

But once the dangerous Ambrose equalised on the hour Pompey looked vulnerable and Rommedahl blasted a 77th-minute winner to make it five away wins in a row for the London side.

Newcastle 3-2 Sunderland - (KO 13.300 - Sunday - 23 October 05)

Shola Ameobi's first-half brace helped hosts Newcastle ease the pressure on Graeme Souness with a thrilling 3-2 derby win over Sunderland.

The Magpies dominated early proceedings and Black Cats keeper Kelvin Davis saved shots from Emre and Ameobi, who was only playing because Michael Owen had been ruled out by injury. But Ameobi broke the deadlock on 34 minutes when he planted a free header from Emre's corner into the net - and another three goals followed in a frantic seven-minute spell.

First Liam Lawrence equalised on 35 with a stunning 25-yard strike, then Ameobi headed home his second (37) before Stephen Elliott bustled through the Toon defence and drilled a 25-yard blockbuster past Shay Given. The visitors made the better start after the break, with both Dean Whitehead and Elliott going close.

But Emre gave Newcastle yet another lead with a brilliant curling free-kick on 63 minutes.

Referee Rob Styles turned down strong claims for a Sunderland penalty on 77 when Charles N'Zogbia fouled Lawrence and Elliott hit the crossbar with a lobbed shot as the hosts grimly hung on for the points.

Newcastle Given, Carr, Boumsong, Taylor, Ramage, Solano (Clark 80), Parker, Emre (Faye 81), N'Zogbia, Shearer, Ameobi (Chopra 79).

Bolton 2-0 West Brom - (KO 15.00 - Sunday - 23 October 05)

Bolton ensured they suffered no European hangover as Diomansy Kamara's missed re-taken penalty proved costly for West Brom in a 2-0 defeat. Sam Allardyce had concerns over fatigue after his Trotters gained a 1-1 Uefa Cup draw with Besiktas in Turkey in midweek.

But the Reebok Stadium hosts dominated early proceedings and Albion keeper Chris Kirkland had to be sharp to keep out first-half efforts from Stelios Giannakopoulos, Kevin Davies and Kevin Nolan. Bryan Robson's Baggies created little but were awarded a debatable penalty - after El Hadji Diouf fouled Kamara - on 19 minutes.

Former Portsmouth forward Kamara slotted home his spot-kick but referee Mike Dean spotted an infringement and from the re-take Kamara lost his cool and blasted his second effort high over the crossbar. That proved costly for the Baggies after the break as relentless pressure from Bolton led to Hidetoshi Nakata breaking the deadlock on 81 minutes with a superb 20-yard free-kick and Nolan adding a second in stoppage time with a clinical finish from the edge of the area.

Bolton Jaaskelainen, O'Brien, Ben Haim, N'Gotty, Pedersen, Faye, Giannakopoulos, Nolan, Nakata, Diouf (Fadiga 84), Davies.
Subs Not Used: Walker, Jaidi, Borgetti, Fernandes.

Booked: Albrechtsen, Carter.

West Ham 2-1 Middlesbrough - (KO 15.00 - Sunday - 23 October 05)

A moment of class finishing from Teddy Sheringham and a controversial decision by the assistant referee saw West Ham beat Middlesbrough 2-1 at Upton Park. Sheringham came off the bench to net with his first touch after 65 minutes before the assistant on the far side ruled Chris Riggott had deflected the ball over the line - despite replays showing Mark Schwarzer had kept it out.

Middlesbrough again suffered from their European endeavours in midweek, failing to really test Shaka Hislop, with a late header from substitute Franck Queudrue proving little consolation.

West Ham Hislop, Repka, Gabbidon, Ferdinand, Konchesky, Benayoun (Dailly 90), Mullins, Reo-Coker, Etherington (Newton 76), Zamora (Sheringham 65), Harewood.
Subs Not Used: Bywater, Bellion.

Everton 1-1 Fulham Broadway - (KO 16.00 - Sunday - 23 October 05)

Fulham Broadway's 100% Barclays Premiership record was ended by a magnificent, defiant Everton who claimed a 1-1 draw on a day of raw emotion at Goodison Park.Leaders Fulham Broadway arrived on Merseyside talking of winning the title by Christmas and ruling football for 100 years.

But for 90 minutes here, rock-bottom Everton defied them. James Beattie struck a first-half penalty and Frank Lampard netted a fine equaliser in the second period, but Everton deserved their morale-boosting point as they rediscovered the confidence that had been lost in a desperate start to their season.

Everton Martyn, Hibbert, Yobo, Weir, Nuno Valente (Ferrari 45), Arteta, Cahill (Davies 70), Neville, Kilbane, Beattie, Ferguson (Bent 78).
Subs Not Used: Wright, McFadden.
Booked: Arteta, Ferrari.
