Premiership Wednesday Wrap-up

last updated Thursday 25th August 2005, 9:35 AM

Day two of the Premiership's Round 3 saw Fulham taking the fight to Arsenal at Highbury. The Gunners were sent rocking as Fulham's keeper Tony Warner saved an early penalty and then The Cottagers took the lead with a goal from Claus Jensen. Fulham had further chances as the game developed but were eventually undone by a poor defensive effort.

The rest of the two day progamme played out as expected with Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City and Middlesbrough winning. The squads that lost already seem to be forming part of a group that could struggle throughout the rest of the season. Individual match comments come from the Sporting Life

Arsenal bounced back from their defeat at Stamford Bridge on Sunday by coming from behind to rout Fulham 4-1 at Highbury.

Things didn't start well for the Gunners, with Lauren having a penalty saved by Tony Warner and then Claus Jensen (22) putting the Cottagers ahead.

But central defender Pascal Cygan levelled before the break, and then two Thierry Henry strikes after the interval put Arsene Wenger's men in control.

Cygan added his second of the night in injury-time to wrap things up.

Bolton 2 Newcastle 0

Newcastle showed just why they need Michael Owen so desperately by again failing to find the net in a 2-0 defeat at Bolton.

El-Hadji Diouf opened the scoring in the latter stages of the first half, and Stelios got the second goal just five minutes after the interval.

Blackburn 0 Tottenham 0

Blackburn had Lucas Neill sent off as they held in-form Tottenham to a goalless draw at Ewood Park.

Spurs boss Martin Jol left both Edgar Davids and Jermain Defoe out of his starting line-up, but Davids still had a pivotal role in proceedings as a substitute. For Neill was red-carded for a two-footed lunge on the Dutchman.

The disciplinary problems may not end there for Blackburn, with defender Andy Todd appearing to clash with Tottenham's Andy Reid after 75 minutes in an off-the-ball incident which was missed by referee Dermot Gallagher and his assistants.

Replays appeared to show Todd aiming a butt at Reid, who was left sprawled on the ground.

Chelsea 4 West Brom 0

Chelsea crushed West Brom 4-0 at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night to go top of the Barclays Premiership.

Frank Lampard netted twice as Jose Mourinho's champions roared to the summit. Joe Cole and Didier Drogba got the other goals.

Lampard's opener came on 23 minutes, a shot from six yards after Michael Essien stepped over Drogba's cross.

Cole made it 2-0 just before the break, netting from eight yards after Shaun Wright-Phillips pulled the ball back.

It was 3-0 midway through the second half when the much-maligned Drogba found the net, and Lampard added a second 10 minutes from time after the persistence of Arjen Robben gave him the chance.
