Premiership Wednesday Preview - 24.08.05

last updated Wednesday 24th August 2005, 10:44 AM

Tuesday evening games in round 3 of the Premiership programme saw a heavy home defeat for Birmingham and a another defeat in the Premiership for Sunderland. Both teams seem to be in early difficulties both in terms of results and performance. Portsmouth and 10 man Aston Villa played out an uninspiring 1-1 draw.

Fans of a number of Premiership squads are already having to face up to the reality that their beloved clubs are going to struggle throughout the season. Individual match comments come from Jonathan Turner for BettingZone.

Arsenal v Fulham (19.45 KO)

This is a fixture that the Gunners have dominated ever since Fulham's promotion to the Premiership - winning seven out of eight.

However it will be fascinating to see how Arsenal respond to Sunday's defeat by champions Chelsea - because it took them a long time to bounce back from their first reverse last season against Manchester United. There may seem to be no obvious link between those two results but the fact that manager Arsene Wenger spoke about a "lack of belief" against the Blues makes it a valid concern.

The good news for the Gunners is that they meet a Fulham outfit which has failed to get out of second gear so far this season. Manager Chris Coleman called their first-half performance at Blackburn on Saturday "totally unacceptable" and then lamented: "I wish I could change things for Wednesday's game and give one or two players a bit of a scare, but I cannot do that. I don't have the resources."

Verdict: Arsenal 2 Fulham 0

Chelsea v West Brom (19.45 KO)

It's hardly been the most convincing of starts to the season by Chelsea - with Hernan Crespo's last-gasp wonder strike snatching a 1-0 win at Wigan before Didier Drogba's shin sealed a slighly-fortunate victory by the same margin against Arsenal on Sunday.

The bottom line is that it's still six points out of six and somewhat ominously for the rest of the top flight Chelsea began last season with two 1-0 successes. Indeed it took them a while to hit top form 12 months ago so it could be dangerous to bank on them thrashing anyone in the near future - including the Baggies.

Bryan Robson's men have built on their Houdini act of last season by taking four points out of six so far this campaign and appear to have a much more potent goal-threat. Remember too that they only lost 1-0 at Stamford Bridge last term which strengthens the case for believing the Baggies could go close.

Verdict: Chelsea 1 West Brom 0

Blackburn v Tottenham (20.00 KO)

Spurs were heavily tipped to break into at least the top six this term and two wins out of two so far suggests the confidence wasn't misplaced. Martin Jol has done an outstanding job since taking over and the signing of Edgar Davids could prove to be his shrewdest move yet. Spurs' real problem last season was their away form so this is exactly the sort of match that will tell us how much they've really progressed.

Blackburn's feisty style of play last term didn't win them many admirers and it looked as if little had changed when they were reduced to ten men and beaten 3-1 on the opening day by newly-promoted West Ham. However we are firm believers in Mark Hughes' managerial qualities and can't help feeling that he simply did what he had to do to avoid relegation. Rovers have become a difficult team to beat under Hughes and it's hard to see there being much between the sides on Wednesday.

They played out a goalless draw at White Hart Lane on the final day of last season and the three previous Premiership matches between them all ended 1-0.

Verdict: Blackburn 1 Tottenham 1

Bolton v Newcastle (20.00 KO)

The frustrations continue to mount for Graeme Souness and Newcastle, their latest display seeing them fail to break down ten-man West Ham at St James' on Saturday.

That highlighted once again just how few options they have up front at present - without the pace of Craig Bellamy and with no threat from the flanks it's not surprising that lone striker Alan Shearer has been feeding on scraps. And with the pressure mounting on Souness, a trip to Bolton doesn't look the ideal fixture to get things back on track.

Wanderers have yet to win themselves this season but deserved so much more than a 1-0 defeat at home to Everton on Sunday - as illustrated by their 16 attempts at goal compared to the Toffees' three. The good news for Bolton boss Sam Allardyce is that, unlike Souness, he does have options as Mexico striker Jared Borgetti and Japan midfielder Hidetoshi Nakata are waiting in the wings.

Verdict: Bolton 2 Newcastle 0
