Premiership Match Day 14 - Wrap

last updated Monday 28th November 2005, 1:08 PM

Match Day 14 in the 2005/2006 Premiership campaign ended with Fulham taking all three points against high flying Bolton and now being closer to mid-table than the relegation zoneThe Cottagers put on an exciting attacking performance and deserved the three points against a Bolton side who were exposed whenever Fulham went forward. Of course Chris Coleman's squad still managed to give everyone a fright at the end when an own goal was scored in injury time giving Bolton half a chance. Fulham did all they could in collecting three points however so did Aston Villa Everton and Birmingham all sides currently below The Cottagers. With two winable away games coming up, against West Brom and Birmingham, Fulham are still in an important place in the season.Elsewhere Sunderland have been cut adrift in bottom place with a 4 point gap above them. Struggling Portsmouth, now managerless, drop into the relegation zone and have a hard road in front of them regardless of who their next manager is. Although West Brom and Birmingham are still in the bottom four they seem to be picking up, which is unfortunate as we play them shortly. Individual match comments below come from the Sportinglife.

Arsenal 3-0 Blackburn - (KO 12.45 - Saturday - 26 November 05)
Arsenal moved into second place in the Barclays Premiership with a 3-0 win over Blackburn while Wigan lost 2-1 at Tottenham. After an impeccably-observed minute's silence in honour of George Best, the Gunners were given a good start by Cesc Fabregas. The Spaniard collected a loose ball on the edge of the Blackburn box before passing the ball into the visitors' net in the fourth minute.Rovers had their chances with Arsenal's centre-half partnership of Kolo Toure and Sol Campbell only just coping with some clever running by Mark Hughes' side. However, the home side held out and on 45 minutes a beautifully-judged through-ball by Robert Pires released Thierry Henry down the Arsenal left. The France striker surged into the Blackburn box before sliding the ball beyond Brad Friedel and Robin van Persie netted a late third in the 90th minute. It moved them a point above Wigan.
Aston Villa 1-0 Charlton - (KO 15.00 - Saturday - 26 November 05)
Steven Davis scored his fifth goal of the season from the Aston Villa midfield in the 69th minute of his side's 1-0 win over Charlton. There was a suggestion that visiting goalkeeper Stephan Andersen had been fouled by Kevin Phillips in the build-up, although all the Denmark international earned was a yellow card for his protests.
Manchester City 0-1 Liverpool - (KO 15.00 - Saturday - 26 November 05)

Liverpool battled their way to a 1-0 win at Manchester City which moved them into contention for the Champions League places. The only goal of the game came in the 61st minute when Steven Gerrard played in John Arne Riise and the Norwegian battered the ball into the roof of the City net.

Sunderland 0-1 Birmingham - (KO 15.00 - Saturday - 26 November 05)

Birmingham won the meeting between the Premier League's bottom two sides with substitute Julian Gray scoring the only goal of the game against Sunderland after 68 minutes at the Stadium of Light.Defeat leaves Sunderland with just five points from 14 games and a four-point deficit to Birmingham, who remain second bottom.

Wigan Athletic 1-2 Tottenham - (KO 15.00 - Saturday - 26 November 05)
Wigan did not recover after falling behind to an eighth-minute goal from Robbie Keane. Arjan de Zeeuw struggled to deal with Teemu Tainio's long ball out of defence and Keane pounced as the Dutchman dallied, firing past Michael Pollitt in the Wigan goal.Keane thought he should have had a penalty on the half-hour mark when his turn in the box prompted Wigan defender Stephane Henchoz to throw his arms around the Republic of Ireland striker. However, referee Mike Riley waved away the Spurs appeals.Edgar Davids made sure of the victory with his first goal in English football in the 77th minute before Lee McCulloch pulled a goal back for the visitors two minutes before the end of normal time.
Portsmouth 0-2 Chelsea - (KO 17.15 - Saturday - 26 November 05)

Frank Lampard scored a penalty on his record 160th consecutive Premiership appearance as Chelsea went 11 points clear at the top with a 2-0 victory over Portsmouth at Fratton Park. After the sacking of manager Alain Perrin on Thursday, Portsmouth had hoped for better under caretaker Joe Jordan whose team fought hard but got little reward against the champions and current leaders.Dejan Stefanovic's foul on Joe Cole gave Lampard his chance from the spot in the 67th minute, a goal which doubled Chelsea's lead after Hernan Crespo had struck first in the 27th minute, deflecting Paulo Ferreira's shot past Jamie Ashdown. The victory sent Chelsea 11 points clear at the top of the table.

Everton 1-0 Newcastle - (KO 13.30 - Sunday - 20 November 05)

Everton moved out of the relegation zone after Joseph Yobo's thumping header earned them a hard-fought 1-0 home win over Newcastle. In an action-packed first half Alan Shearer had a goalbound shot cleared off the line by James Beattie on 30 minutes, and after Andy van der Meyde, James McFadden and Ameobi again went close, McFadden appeared to handle Ameobi's shot on the goalline five minutes before the break. The drama and pace did not let up after the interval, with Yobo towering high to power home a header on 46 minutes. Albert Luque came off the bench and found the sidenetting on 85 minutes - but it was Everton who went closest to scoring again, with Beattie firing over the bar from 12 yards out and Given pulling off a stunning triple save to deny McFadden and Tim Cahill in stoppage time.

Fulham 2-1 Bolton - (KO 14.00 - Sunday - 20 November 05)

Brian McBride netted a brace for Fulham as they eased their relegation fears with a comfortable 2-1 win over Bolton at Craven Cottage.Fulham were rampant from the off and the game's first attack saw Bolton's Abdoulaye Faye head a Joey O'Brien cross over but Fulham's reply was a fourth-minute opener through McBride. In the 18th minute McBride found the net again, with Jaidi - who was removed after half an hour - culpable.Bolton battled on and grabbed a late consolation through Sylvain Legwinski's own goal.

Middlesbrough 2-2 West Brom - (KO 15.00 - Sunday - 20 November 05)
Aiyegbeni Yakubu scored his ninth goal of the season for Middlesbrough but they had to settle for a 2-2 draw in front of their home fans. The former Portsmouth striker neatly tucked away a penalty after West Brom had forged ahead through Nathan Ellington and then Kanu.Middlesbrough had opened the scoring thanks to Mark Viduka's finish but failed to build on that against a team without an away win in the league this season.
West Ham 1-2 Man Utd - (KO 16.00 - Sunday - 20 November 05)
Wayne Rooney and John O'Shea both scored as Manchester United produced an early second-half turnaround to beat West Ham 2-1 at Upton Park.United climbed to second in the Premiership table after coming from behind to beat the Hammers, where fans had paid an emotional farewell to George Best with a minute's applause before kick-off.The Hammers went ahead after just 52 seconds through Marlon Harewood's close-range strike from Matthew Etherington's low ball in from the left flank. Roy Carroll was kept busy by his former United team-mates for the rest of the first half but the visitors did not find the equaliser until just after the restart. Tomas Repka failed to clear from the edge of a crowded penalty box, Park was first to the loose ball, and played in Rooney. The England striker turned Danny Gabbidon inside out, before dispatching a low drive past Carroll from 10 yards for his fifth league goal of the season. Then on 56 minutes, another foraging run and shot from Rooney forced a corner on the right. His delivery went deep across the six-yard box. Carroll came to claim the high ball, but O'Shea produced a towering leap to beat the goalkeeper and power a header in from close range. Ruud van Nistelrooy hit the bar with a delicate chip soon after but there were no further goals and United now lie 10 points behind Chelsea with a game in hand.
