Post Match Reaction - Coleman accepts defeat

last updated Monday 25th April 2005, 7:26 AM

Fulham Assistant manager Steve KeanFulham boss Chris Coleman paid testament to 'worthy champions' Chelsea, after Fulham's 3-1 defeat to their neighbours.

Coleman felt his side deserved more out of a hard-fought game, but believes that Chelsea are the best team in both England and the UEFA Champions League.

"I think we deserved to get something out of the game, Chelsea showed they are worthy champions," said Coleman.

"I still think we need one win to make certain of staying up but what has cost us this season has been inconsistency."

When questioned as to whether Chelsea can win the Champions League as well as the domestic title, Coleman said: "Why not? No disrespect to Liverpool, but I think the other two semi-finalists will be hoping that Liverpool beat Chelsea as Chelsea are the best team."

Chelsea Manager Jose MourinhoChelsea Manager Jose Mourinho claimed Chelsea had produced a super-human performance to place "one hand on the Premiership trophy" in defeating Fulham at Stamford Bridge.

"Our players are not supermen. The reason we won the game was just because of our character.

"We had no physical condition to do it, they were much fresher than us, with one day's more rest and 15 matches less this season.

"But this was a bit extra-human. I don't think that Fulham deserved to lose but my players were fantastic in very difficult circumstances and fought for the result."

"I never lie to the players, I always want them to face reality and we all did that at half-time as I told them they were dead [on their feet]," he declared.

"I told them 'We are in a very difficult situation, they are fresher and faster than us, but this is about mentality and we have to win - I don't know how, but we have to do it'."

"I think that, without Arjen Robben, we wouldn't have won this game. He was sharp and, because of that, he brought a different pace and intensity to the game," observed Mourinho.

"The squad is fantastic. Every player is committed to the cause, even though some of them play more than others.
