Head to Head

  • Fulham are out to retain their unbeaten Premiership record against Newcastle after winning the first ever meeting 3-1 at Craven Cottage and drawing 1-1 in this corresponding fixture in April. Last season's St James' Park game was a disappointing affair, Kieron Dyer calmly took the only chance of the first half to put the Magpies ahead. Sean Davies fired in a stinging shot from the edge of the area, deflected in by Louis Saha to earn Fulham a deserved point.
  • Fulham's only League win in 10 visits over 42 years was 1-4 in the old Second Division on 16 October, 1982.
  • The Cottagers' last top flight win at St James' Park was 0-1 on 29 September, 1951.
  • Newcastle have won three of their last six home League meetings with the Londoners.
  • Newcastle's biggest win in this corresponding fixture was 7-2 on 24 August, 1960 in the old League - Division One. Fulham's biggest win in a League match at Newcastle was 1-4 on 16 October, 1982 in the former Second Division.
  • No player has ever been sent off in this corresponding fixture.
  • The last player to bag a hat trick in League fixtures between these clubs was Allan Clarke. He scored three of Fulham's goals in the 5-1 home top flight win on 4 February, 1967.

Matchday Referee Alan Wiley (Burntwood)
Not only is Alan Wiley a referee, but the 41-year-old also earns his living as a policeman - which should endear him to the Premier League crowds.

Referee Alan WileyMaking his Premiership debut in the 2000/01 season, Wiley kept a low profile and avoided any controversial decisions. His standing improved during the 2001/02 campaign though, and Wiley took charge of 23 matches, handing out an average of 2.96 yellow cards per game.

Wiley's first taste of power came in 1981 during a match in the Walsall Minor League, but his ascension to top ranking official came via the assistant's route. He became a league linesman in 1991, moving on to the Premiership's list in 1994, before finally becoming a top referee in 1995.

(Ed. Mr. Wiley in fact reffed this fixture last year booking just one Newcastle player he last reffed Fulham during the Bolton game at the start of this season however he will be better remembered for the Fulham 0 Liverpool 2 game at the end of last season. During the game Fulham thought they should have been awarded a penalty two minutes after the interval when Luis Boa Morte went down under a challenge from Xavier. But instead of pointing to the spot, referee Alan Wiley booked the Portuguese for diving. At the time it seemed a poor decision as Xavier had been leaning on Boa Morte with his left arm. With the aid of t.v. footage it was clear that a penalty should have been given but Wiley chose to stand by his decision rather than at least withdrawing the caution.)
