Match Preview - Fulham v Portsmouth 30.08.04

Fulham boss Chris ColemanFulham boss Chris Coleman has paid a glowing tribute to Harry Redknapp ahead of tonight's clash with Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

The Barclays Premiership's youngest manager will lock horns with one of the most experienced names in the game in Pompey boss Redknapp as both teams look to make amends for early season slip-ups.

But while Coleman is hugely impressed with what his opposite number at Fratton Park has achieved, he insists he has never been tempted to seek advice from his rival and would rather learn from his own mistakes.

"You must have a lot of respect for anyone who has been in the game at the level Harry has for the length of time he has. After one season I know how hard it is so to do it year-in year-out for all that time is remarkable," he said.

"When I took the Fulham job it was on the understanding that I was in charge. I did not want anyone above me upstairs. I knew I would get things wrong and right, but I always had confidence in myself.

"To call a manager with more experience than me every time I had a problem would have been ridiculous because I would have been on the phone every five minutes - four or five problems crop up every day.

"You just have to get on with it and make sure you get more things right than wrong."

Coleman has demanded a "big reaction" from his players when they meet Pompey following their dismal performance against Middlesbrough.

The Cottagers collapsed to a 2-0 defeat against Steve McClaren's side after being comprehensively outplayed in the second half and Coleman does not want to see a repeat performance.

"I may make two or three changes for Portsmouth but first I will consider the way they have responded over the last few days," said Coleman.

"I want a big reaction from them and I am sure we will get one but that does not mean we are going to win the game - Portsmouth are a good team and we will be playing them in their own back yard.

"But I would imagine we will see a better performance than we did on Wednesday night, which was very disappointing."

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp is convinced Ricardo Fuller can become one of the Barclays Premiership's discoveries of the season despite a long-term knee problem which at one stage threatened the Jamaica striker's career.

Fuller's original £2million move from Preston broke down when he failed a medical on a left knee rebuilt during surgery to cure a cruciate ligament injury.

Pompey revived the transfer on a pay-as-you-play basis which will earn Preston a reduced £1.1m after 60 appearances.

Fuller makes his debut against Fulham at Fratton Park on Monday night determined to make the most of his second chance.

Redknapp calls up Fuller to replaced Lomana LuaLua, who is ruled out by a groin injury, and has every confidence that he will succeed at the highest domestic level.

"Ricardo looks a terrific player. I have been really pleased with him in training. "He is a big lad who will cause Premiership defences problems with his aggression. "Ricardo was heartbroken when he failed his medical first time round so I was delighted when we managed to sort out a deal.

"I don't think it is a gamble because his record in Scotland and with Preston is impressive. The better he does, the better we will do and the more Preston will get.

"I have no problem about throwing him in against Fulham. This season will be harder than ever in the Premiership. "All the clubs who have come up have spent a lot of money and Fulham are one of the sides you would expect to be challenging for a place in the top six.

"They spent £7million on a goalkeeper and there is no way we can compete with that. They are on a different level in that respect.

"It has been a nightmare summer but the only benefit is that, unlike other clubs, we have a two-week break.

"But in that time we have not signed anyone and we have not got any unfit players fit again.

"We have not had a lot of luck with signings and in some way it is like the transfer window never opened for us."
