Not only is Alan Wiley a referee, but the 40-year-old earns his living as a policeman - which should endear him to the Premier League crowds. Making his Premiership debut last year, Wiley kept a low profile and avoided any controversial decisions.
That is if you ignore his treatment of Luis Boa Morte in the third of the four times he reffed a Fulham game last year. In the home game against Liverpool Abel Xavier, from behind, made contact with Boa Morte and exerted downward pressure on his shoulder as Luis was running at goal. Mr. Wiley decided Luis dived and yellow carded him. During a game a ref only has a moment to decide and we are all human after all but Mr. Wiley could have reviewed the video tape after the game and changed his decision he choose not to. Not very nice.
Alan Wiley also refereed the Community Shield last weekend, showing 6 yellow cards and attracted controversy when he failed to send off Liverpool's Steven Gerrard for his tackle on Patrick Vieira
Bolton were shown seven red cards in Premiership matches last season. Only Middlesbrough had that many players dismissed.
